I find it strange that some people claim that certain others aren't worth the cost of "artificial" food and hydration, which they consider to be extraordinary measures, but they don't mind paying for expensive procedures.

The heart failure pacemakers range in cost from $35,000 to over $45,000. The additional cost of the procedure with associated medical care varies greatly depending on the place that the person receives the pacemaker. In an outpatient setting, where the procedure is done on the same day of discharge or the day prior to discharge, the average cost is over $2,000 plus the cost of the pacemaker. However, in the inpatient setting, where you are admitted to the hospital, the average cost is over $60,000 plus the cost of the pacemaker.

Wagglebee, just for the sake of comparison, how much does "artificial" food and water cost?

From everything I've seen, the cost of having a feeding tube administered by family members at home is around $30K per year and this includes the medical devices and regular visits by technicians and nurses.

Thanks Wagglebee. I just don’t understand how anyone could think another person (especially a family member) doesn’t deserve to be fed, hydrated, and cared for in their hour of need. Especially when it costs so little, and requires so little effort.

Kevorkian was diagnosed with terminal Hepatitis C in 2006 and given only a year to live. That’s why he was released early from prison. The bastard could have practiced what he preached and killed himself, but the fact is he got his rocks off watching other people die, whether they were terminally ill or not. When it came to ending his own life due to his terminal illness, he wouldn’t walk the walk. Did you read the comments after the article? Those folks are whacked.

Exactly. What we're REALLY looking at is the DIFFERENCE between a year's supply of food for that person and the cost of tube feeding.

And that year's supply of food cost is going to vary greatly depending on how they shop and how much convenience food they buy, and how many meals they eat out at a restaurant, or in other public venues.

Being on a feeding tube might actually be cheaper than my current lifestyle and I've got disability insurance that would replace over 90% of my income.
