Assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian, known as "Dr. Death" for helping more than 100 people end their lives, died early on Friday at age 83, his lawyer said.

Kevorkian died at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, where he had been hospitalized for about two weeks with kidney and heart problems, said Mayer Morganroth, Kevorkian's attorney and friend.

Kevorkian, a pathologist, was imprisoned for eight years for second-degree murder and was paroled in 2007. As a condition of his parole, he vowed not to assist in any suicides.

He was convicted after a CBS News program aired showing a video of Kevorkian administering lethal drugs to a 52-year-old man suffering from debilitating amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease.

Can I ask the obvious question? Did he do it himself?

That is the question my wife asked when I told her this morning.

May He show mercy in His justice.

Not very Christian of me, but I would have a hard time sincerely expressing that sentiment, just as I would for Hitler, who at least was dead before I was born, so I never experienced the emotions of the people of the time, like I have for the good doctor.

I can’t ever see me trying to die, regardless of the pain, It goes against my understanding of God’s commands.

But I haven’t been there, so what do I know.

But if I did, I could make the decision myself, and would rather do it myself than drag other people into the decision making process, or have them feeling it was alright to pressure me.

In the case I cited, he killed the young mother of three from Norwood who had no clear diagnosis of a life threatening or limiting illness. She was definitely depressed. And there is evidence that he did more than facilitate deaths, he actually pushed the plunger for some reluctant “patients”.

There is no hope or dignity in fighting a disease like this one...there is only pain, suffering, and death.

That is only true if you think there is no value in suffering. As a Catholic, I beg to differ. Very much so. Suffering has tremendous value.

Here is Saint Paul's take: Saint Paul Explains the Meaning of Suffering.

You'll notice that many of the greatest saints of the Catholic Church suffered from horrible physical ailments. John Paul II was a model of suffering to the end. Why? Because we believe that suffering can be redemptive--not just for us, but for those we pray for.
