English as the Official Language
e-mail ^ | June 3, 2011 | Randy Forbes

"...the U.S. is one of less than a dozen countries in the world without an official language.

"Requiring the use of English does not mean that our society does not value the preservation of cultural heritage. However, the ability to communicate in one standard language in the workplace, in our schools, and in official settings not only improves our efficiency as we carry out our daily activities, but it more importantly builds unity among citizens and creates a sense of national pride. That is why I have consistently advocated for making English the official language of the United States.

"English Language Unity Act: I have cosponsored legislation, H.R. 997, which would establish English as our nation’s official language. This bill requires all official functions of the U.S. to be conducted in English, establishes a uniform language requirement for naturalization, and places an obligation on representatives of the federal government to encourage individuals to learn English.

"National Language Act: I have also cosponsored a bill, H.R. 1164, that requires that all official business, including publications, income tax forms, informational materials and public ceremonies where an oath is administered, to be conducted in English. This bill also repeals bilingual voting requirements."

AMEN!!!

~240 years overdue, not that the Founding Fathers in their wildest, nastiest nightmares envisioned what would become of the country they formed.

The Tower of Babel concept didn't/doesn't work too well...

Should have been done 100 years ago. I’m sick of hearing that Spanish is a necessity these days. It’s a crock.

In Washington state, you can get your voter’s pamphlet in one of a dozen or so languages.

What seems to have prevented you from posting the whole thing?

Why have you chosen to direct traffic away from Free Republic for no reason?

When at a bank machine I always make a loud statement in front of everyone, “What do you mean do I want to speak English?, I’m in America you ass-xxxx”.

That’s nothing. Here in mexifornia, when you come in for the written test, the clerks have the gall to ask you if you want it in English or the language of your choice. It’s in more than 50 GD languages or dialects..

Austrian, too? Or did they remove that language recently?

Hey how dare you to remove Austrian? ;-)
Just because of the fact that not a single person in this world does speak this “language” does not mean that it should be removed :-)

This should be considered a liberal bill. The Founding Fathers decided not to have an official language. I am sick of this,
“living, breathing Constitution,” crap. It’s just another excuse to stomp on the Founding Fathers.

Last time it came up for a vote to make English the official language it was voted down primarily by liberals, that alone should tell you something. I strongly believe in enhancing and furthering anything that unites us and reject everything what divides us. I also believe, if you are incapable or not willing to learn the language, you shouldn't be here in the first place. By the way my mother tongue is German but prefer English as I feel it is much easier.

I am American.

I call my bank.

I am an American calling my own bank.

The teller says, “Do you wish to speak English?”

No! I wish to speak ‘Andory’ from the tribe of Andour. From southeast west Africa.

Interesting. I've always thought that English must be fairly easy; otherwise, it wouldn't be the "world" language.

We don't have grammatical gender; we don't have noun declensions; our verb conjugations are fairly simple (compared to French, and the Spanish conjugations are even more difficult). In fact, our major hurdle seems to be spelling, which is only semi-phonetic.

But save your german for ranting!
There is nothing like hearing a good old german rant.
(The german language sounds like it was just made for this ;-)
btw. I do agree if you are willing to live in the US you should learn the language or get the hell out.
Of course this could be said for every country.

God Love You!!! FANTASTIC POST ! ! !

My grandfather came from Italy as a penniless 14 year old. He learned English and even changed his name to sound “more American”.

From what I’ve been told (he died decades before I was hatched) he forbade anything but English to be spoken in his home. He believed if you’re here, you speak English, period.

Dream on. I pick my wife up from work as an RN. When I wait near the entrance, I almost never hear English. Of course, I live in Mexico.

Well, it is called Arizona, but the public schools here teach that it SHOULD be Mexico...
