To be clear, I don't know exactly what Snipes claimed or didn't claim, and in truth your original version/impression may be more accurate than what I implied. Looking up his trial & appeal up (as much as I care to) it appears he was convicted of three misdemeanors (!) of not filing returns for 3 years and of generalized "tax evasion". I didn't see anything in particular about him filing "frivolous" returns. Ordinarily, a taxpayer who didn't file returns would not go to prison, but I guess the idea that he earned about $40 million and didn't pay spit in taxes was in itself viewed as goading the IRS' fury. Hey, maybe he can get a job at the Treasury Dep't when he get out.
