McCarthy, Emanuel outline police response and criticize media (Chicago wilding)
Chicago Tribune ^ | June 9, 2011 | Kristen Mack and Jeremy Gorner

Posted on 06/09/2011 5:08:41 AM PDT by abb

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and newly confirmed police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said Wednesday that they're adding a "marginal" number of officers to the Near North Side to combat a spate of violence, even as they questioned the media's coverage of the attacks.

McCarthy cautioned reporters about characterizing crimes correctly, pointing to the differences between shoplifting, robbery and criminal mischief. And the mayor suggested journalists be more judicious in using the term "flash mob."

"We have to be sensitive to what it conjures up," Emanuel said.

But the administration has played a role in creating the ongoing frenzy. Authorities slapped a mob action charge on some of the youths arrested in the attacks. And McCarthy has pushed "flash mob" into the Chicago crime vernacular since he arrived in May.

Still, the quick series of attacks in affluent areas previously considered safe has created a cycle where rising media attention fuels public fears and each new incident is viewed through that prism.

For example, on Tuesday evening, two teens were mugged in the downtown area, and some news outlets quoted witnesses and sources saying another mob attack had occurred.

Interviews with police and the victims show that the incident appeared to be a mugging that escalated when teens who were robbed chased the suspects, pushed one of them, and then got attacked themselves, according to one of the teen's accounts.

The 16-year-old victim and his 19-year-old friend, both from southwest suburban Justice, were walking through a tunnel from Oak Street Beach as a group of six to 10 people surrounded them on North Michigan Avenue, according to authorities and one of the victims. The 16-year-old asked one person from the group if he could buy a cigarette from him.

Good thing the citizens of Chicago can’t carry guns. Someone might get hurt.

It’s the media’s fault for reporting it and hurting Emmanuel’s poll numbers.

If CCW were the law, “wilding” would lose it’s appeal.

"We have to be sensitive to what it conjures up," Emanuel said.
The time for sensitivity expired a loooong time ago.
It's time to apply a little justice - like Richard Daly did in 1968.

Do they really think people are so stupid as to think what you call criminal thugs makes a difference as to the perception of the crimes?

It’s the media’s fault for reporting it and hurting Emmanuel’s poll numbers.

Awaiting Rahm's reprise of the term "nattering nabobs of negativism," circa 1970.

More likely “If you point this out, you are racist. “ When you live behind a wall and go everywhere with bodyguards, this kind of thing doesn’t exist in your world. He doesn’t give a damn about it. But his phony baloney job depends on the black vote.

Here's the money quote from the new police chief.

“We will not in any way shape or form allow a member of the Chicago Police Department to engage in racial profiling. The fact is, we engage in behavioral profiling. When people commit criminal acts, we will go after them, we will arrest them, and we will prosecute them. It’s not about the way somebody looks. It’s their behavior.”
Pressed to identify the race of the 29 young men arrested, McCarthy said, “You know what? I don’t even check. I don’t care if they’re purple. The fact is, they’re criminals committing crime and the fact is, we’re going to arrest them.”

Get it? The police chief won't tolerate even one single case of racial profiling. In fact, he is so pure and honest and true blue- he doesn't even know or care about the race of the punks arrested for committing these crimes. Whenever I read something like this, I'm always reminded of Charlton Heston in the Planet of the Apes- "It's a madhouse! A madhouse!"

no no. That attaches a presumption that these poor people are criminals

Holders of undocumented property is better

i hate like poison this ‘racial profiling’ nonsense

YOU HAVE TO PROFILE BASED ON RACE AND MANY OTHER FACTORS

If a mob comprised 100% of black people attacks, then you have to go LOOK FOR BLACK PEOPLE.

Is that so awful to say????

You shouldn't have added 'Chicago Wilding' to the HL. As what's been going on since last Saturday isn't 'wilding', it's Domestic Terrorism by Holder's People.

And Mayor Rahm and this new Chief can take their lies and shove them. This IS Domestic Terrorism as it isn't a bunch of little kids creating mischief. These Flash Mobs of 20 are attacking anyone they see and beat and rob them. The latest from yesterday is numerous attacks on Buses all over the city.

And very soon someone is going to DIE. From the attacks and beatings or from a Cardiac - Monday Old People were the target. And the CPD can't do squat, they don't have enough manpower (about 3,000-5,000 Cops short). The ONLY way to end this TERRORISM is for the residents of Chicago to say 'Screw The Laws', I'm carrying a GUN, and WILLING TO USE IT!

Holder's People don't care about any laws so why should normal people who DON'T WANT TO DIE from political correctness. Let a few of these TERRORISTS start showing up at the Cook County Morgue with Six Holes in their chest. That'll stop this crap pdq.

Then Holder and 'his people' can suck on that for a while!
