"Once a Marine, always a Marine" apparently doesn't apply at a Pennsylvania high school where a 17-year-old graduate has been told she cannot wear her uniform when she receives her diploma.
Lindsay Starr told KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh she wanted to wear her dress blues during Friday's graduation ceremony at North Allegheny High School in Pittsburgh, but that school officials denied her request, citing the requirement of wearing only the traditional cap and gown.
"Im just trying to show pride in what I belong to now," she told the station. "I belong to the United States Marine Corps as a 17-year-old. Like, cmon, now."

School is standing by a reasonable policy, I have no problems with it.
Silly school. They should ditch or at least make an exception from their cap and gown policy. Most graduates are 18 and have every right to decide what to wear.
I agree with that assessment. She sounds like a good kids and need to realize that you are always a Marine, with or without the uniform.
I wonder how the Marines would feel if she wanted to wear her graduation gown for Marine Corps Boot Camp Graduation. I am so sick and tired of military folks thinking they are all that and can do whatever they want. Yes I am 24 years in the military and have seen many spoiled brats not getting what they want.
If they haven’t taught this young lady to knuckle under to petty authority and silly rules in 13 years of public school, I don’t think she’s gonna learn it now.
When I graduated from High School, I asked my mother if she wanted to go, and she said she didn’t need to, so I skipped it. We went out for a nice dinner, instead. It’s not that big a deal.
That’s one of the few Marines I’d consider giving a reacharound to...
I agree. If she thinks being a Marine is about the clothing, I'd bet other Marines are going to have something to show her about it.
“Thats one of the few Marines Id consider giving a reacharound to...”
Or then it might be the other way around...
It was a nice thought, but she ought to accept that graduation has a uniform, just as the Marines have a different uniform for different occasions.
and the young Marine should tell them where to stick it, pointing out that there are things way more important in life than walking across a stage in a cap and gown, just to receive a diploma. The diploma is just as valid received through the mail as it is being handed to you by some school official.
Guarantee you that she learned more about life, and herself, in 13 weeks at Parris Island than she did in 4 years of high school. 20 years from now those dress blues will mean a lot more to her than some silly certificate stating that the government declares her educated.
School’s policy is reasonable since it seems to be consistently applied.
Her presence on the stage in her uniform could send a real positive message - Work hard and you will succeed!
She should just tell them 'mail the diploma to my duty station'. High school is old news for her now.
As opposed to going to the media and whining about a school rule.
Agree.
They have a reasonable policy and her USMC uniform is in no way related to her graduation.
Kudos to the young Marine for her accomplishments, but taking these things to the press has always made me a bit angry.
Berks County, Pa Has a similar incident going on with the grads wearing a smock as ARMY Recruits. I respect their intentions, hate that they were not allowed to wear them, but can see down the road everybody showing up with rainbow sashes (for gay), black drop cloths for Wiccan or Oscar Meir hats for Weiner supporters.
