Like many attorneys defending a client facing the death penalty, Casey Anthony's attorney recently moved for a mistrial. While the strategy is common, Jose Baez's reasoning was not. He claimed the evidence disparaged his character.
By stepping into the spotlight of the courtroom, Baez went from being a local lawyer with a past that includes child support battles, bad checks and bikini businesses to the defense attorney in the most high profile case in the country. ...
It has taken a while for Baez to establish himself... Despite graduating from law school in 1997, the Navy veteran was denied admission to the Florida bar for eight years until 2005.
An order by the Supreme Court of Florida states that he was denied admission because of his failure to pay child support and secure life and health insurance for his teenage daughter. It states that he had previously declared bankruptcy, written bad checks and defaulted on student loans ...
The Florida Supreme Court said his financial mishaps coupled with failure to pay child support "show a lack of respect for the rights of others and a total lack of respect for the legal system, which is absolutely inconsistent with the character and fitness qualities required of those seeking to be afforded the highest position of trust and confidence recognized by our system of law." ...
In the years Baez was fighting to be admitted to the bar, he ran two bikini selling businesses and two nonprofits. The bikini businesses, Bon Bon Bikinis and Brazilian-Bikinis.com, are both inactive ... The nonprofit organizations centered around domestic violence prevention and advocating for children. They are inactive now ... He also reportedly worked for Lexis Nexis...
Baez's financial troubles have continued. ... His home was reportedly in foreclosure last year. ...

I hope she is found guilty so this pathetic loser loses the case.
Baez is a typical sleazy shyster. The Florida Supreme Court must have been jealous of his prowess as a scumbag which is why they denied him entry to the bar.
Casey Anthony ping.
Baez is completely in over his head with this case.
Baez comes across as a major league jerk.
I smell the beginning of an incompetent counsel defense on appeal.
His credibility gaps and only average ability in the court room may be cause for a mis-trial. Hope not.
Seems like a slam dunk for that.
Even if found guilty, people say they are overreaching for 1st degree murder, even then the appeals would probably add up to over a decade of delay.
Mistrial? No way. Reversible error? Possibly, though I don’t think so.
Agreed.
He should have never offered a ‘manner’ or ‘cause’ of death; or included the father as an accomplice and impugned his character as an incestuous child molester.
Baez should have simply stated that Casey Anthony abandoned Caylee in a mall or in the park and went into a psychotic break with reality. (i.e. nuts).

Good for appeal....”ineffective counsel”
I seem to recall evidence that the defendant spent a lot of time looking at information about chloroform on the internet.
Yeah, but only 80 times.

Yep!
Are you freaking kidding me? This rat bastid defaulted on his student loans and still gets to play lawyer???? they shouldn’t allow him to work in that field if he can’t pay his loans. Sheesh.
Without competent defense attorneys, our nation becomes a police state.
A competent defense attorney for EVERY accused, no matter how vile, is essential to ensure that we are innocent until proven guilty.
I appreciate the work of defense attorneys AND D.A.s I trust the jury. She will be convicted, and if given a competent defense, the verdict will not be overturned.
That would have made a ton more sense. Did you see her histrionics in court today? Interesting how the tears dried up every time the jury was out of the room.
tatoo testimony was low key..duh!
"After working as a prosecutor he promptly rose through the ranks of the judiciary but hit a roadblock in 1998 when he publicly acknowledged and apologized for an affair with a former deputy court administrator."
