U.S. Underwrites Internet Detour Around Censors
NYT ^ | 6/12/11 | JAMES GLANZ and JOHN MARKOFF

Posted on 06/13/2011 12:04:49 AM PDT by Nachum

The Obama administration is leading a global effort to deploy “shadow” Internet and mobile phone systems that dissidents can use to undermine repressive governments that seek to silence them by censoring or shutting down telecommunications networks.

The effort includes secretive projects to create independent cellphone networks inside foreign countries, as well as one operation out of a spy novel in a fifth-floor shop on L Street in Washington, where a group of young entrepreneurs who look as if they could be in a garage band are fitting deceptively innocent-looking hardware into a prototype “Internet in a suitcase.”

Shadow internet.

This is what they are wasting our time and money with? A shadow internet? The country is broke and they are community organizing.

This “shadow internet” is how Omoslem plans to community-organize the Moslem Brotherhood.

You'll have to forgive me if I don't believe that the Obama administration is doing this out of purely altruistic motives. If they create a communications channel, you can bet that it's one they can tap, direct, and control.

This is nothing but a means to use rebels and activists to further Obama's world agenda.

Nothing to see here. Move along. It has nothing to do with his October surprise or martial law.

Hell we might need something like that here soon.

Yeah, but something like that is sadly easy to locate. Radio DF gear is remarkably compact and rapid now.

Yeah, but something like that is sadly easy to locate.

Not if you are transmitting below the noise floor. See CDMA, UWB. You need a correlative receiver that is synchronized with the transmitter, and correct keys, to even see the signal.

Yeah, but if you’re going to do *that*, you’re going to have to go through the trouble of issuing specialized transceivers to your intended ‘clients’ and the chances of such amateurs not getting caught and giving the whole thing away are nil.

This seems to be geared towards providing service to existing civilian devices - in which case, yeah, it’s going to be easy to find.

Heck, a hacked $20 Wifi detector will be able to tell you where the thing is if you just walk around.

So ACORN, SEIU thugs and Public Allies can get command and control instructions around November '12

Obama's "Public Allies" are at www.publicallies.org for those that would like to see what's going on.

So....Obama believes it’s OK to help foreign dissidents bypass official censors but here at home he’s pushing for government control of every single packet that crosses the Internet in the form of the ludicrously titled Net Neutrality.

“Yeah, but something like that is sadly easy to locate. Radio DF gear is remarkably compact and rapid now.”

I would assume then that something to find the DF gear would also be easy to produce. In the event of martial law, these become a target rich environment.

Direction finding gear does not necessarily have to produce a signal.

A good set of tools for anyone to have would include:

Email validation, authentication and encryption software: GnuPG or PGP
A plug server: Tonido or equivalent (keeps your data off the cloud)
Mesh network software: Daihinia (turns computer wireless devices into mesh nodes so you can set up a local network)

All of the above are either free or very inexpensive.

Obama's "Public Allies" are at www.publicallies.org for those that would like to see what's going on.

Is this a .org that needs infiltration, or do they vet the applicants' political backgrounds?
