Anthony Weiner’s road back may be long (fits sex addiction)

First came the crotch photos. Then came the lying and denial. Now, Rep. Anthony Weiner is seeking treatment for his misdeeds, leaving Washingtonians asking: treatment for what?

Based on the New York Democrat’s behavior, which the congressman says includes sending lewd messages and images over the Internet to six women in the past three years, experts interviewed by POLITICO said he could suffer from an array of conditions that could merit treatment, including narcissism, obsessive-compulsive disorder or even some variety of sexual addiction.

None of the possibilities comes with a silver-bullet treatment that delivers quick results — meaning that if Weiner is found to suffer from any of these conditions, he isn’t going to duck into a rehab center and emerge a week later with a doctor’s assurance that he is “cured,” cleared to return to Congress.

Instead, treatment requires weeks, months or even years of one-on-one therapy or group meetings, a slog through a 12-step program or perhaps even medication. It might be easy for a celebrity or politician caught in a scandal to say, “I’m getting help,” but if he really needs it — and wants it — it won’t be a breeze.

“He risked his career, his reputation and his recent marriage to engage in certain behavior while ignoring what the consequence may be,” said Sandra Davis, an addiction expert with Shady Side Psychotherapy Associates in Pittsburgh. “When someone chooses to do that, we say they are progressing down a long continuum of developing an addiction.”

Even though there’s no evidence that Weiner met any of the women with whom he shared electronic correspondence, his habit could still fit the range of behavior associated with a sex addiction.

There are other reasons why someone might engage in risky behavior, including a personality disorder that masks underlying insecurity.

“With personality and narcissistic disorder, people in power often have a grandiose sense of entitlement and sense that they can get away with anything. In reality, most of them are rather insecure and feel smaller than they actually are,” said Brett Kennedy, a licensed clinical psychologist based in New York City.

Tackling any of these problems requires time.

For instance, a typical stay in a professional sex addiction facility can last anywhere from a few weeks to several months. The programs often include a mix of psychiatric evaluation, as well as group and individual therapies....

I'm no "expert", but as I said the other day...
This is mental instability, not sexual predilection.

Sounds like the psychological profile of the average politician to me.

He had an election lasting longer than four hours.

Bullcrap.

This is a guy drunk on power who thought he was far enough up the totem pole to get away with this inappropriate behavior. And his ‘wife’, well, this brings some unwelcome focus.

Mama Hillary ain’t too happy which is probably the worst part of this. And where is the hubbub on the ‘pregnancy’? Did Huma already miscarry? Guess it didn’t have the desired effect of garnering enough sympathy to ignore his disgusting behavior and give him a free passorama. But a bright spot, Dems were forced to confront their own hypocrisy.

And kudos to the first hand holding picture of Weiner and his ‘bride’. Nice touch. Too bad he didn’t send those pictures to Huma.

Big job + small person = arrogance. PERIOD!!

(It didn’t help that he has probably got a real, low IQ problem and enough self-importance to choke the whole stable.)

All RATs have "sex addiction" They just can't stop screwing the public.

Weiner suffers from "being an @$$h0Ie" addiction. There are a couple of behavioral modification therapies for that. One is a regular good beating, the other is a lobotomy...maybe Thorazine.

How about a bumper sticker with Weiner, Barney Fwank, and The Messiah...the caption:

This is mental instability, not sexual predilection.

You are mostly correct. However, it is an emotional/mental disability that is often manifested in unusual sexual activity. Weiner is the classic malignant narcissist. Read up on narcissism and you will find that often, those so afflicted, engage in unusual sexual behavior -- even perverted -- one way or another. They either withdraw from sex, withhold it from their partners, or become overly active, even addicted to sexual activity. When addicted to sex it is because they feel power over the women they engage in sex with (either actually or via the Internet), and they want their adoration. Those two emotional needs are stimulants and they cannot live without them once they start.

It becomes their drug of choice and the addiction is very strong. Often narcissism is rooted in some early family dysfunction. Men have issues with their mother, for example...either hating her, or having been abused emotionally or physically by her. So they try to regain their self confidence and self respect by abusing women via acts of sexual perversions. Who knows what is at the base of Weiner's problem, but as with alcoholics, there is usually something that they are trying to either cover up emotionally, or drown memories, or get a power high...or all.

With the Internet...and, I must say, thousands of willing partners (women and men who have no self respect and might even be narcissists themselves), they can engage in sexual arousal and masturbation privately, undetected, and without actually having physical contact with a live partner. It is the perfect playground for a pervert, as we all have seen over and over. And, in their minds, the narcissist never believes he is cheating because he feels there is no human contact. They are masters at twisting and rationalizing, manipulating and convincing others that their beliefs are normal or to be considered accepted.

And there is no magic, real "cure," they can only elect to daily work to control their urges. It is extremely hard for these men and women afflicted in this way, to refrain from the activity that has become their supply of emotional highs. Temptation is always there and they will lie over and over to hide their "habit" because they have become so dependent on the thrill that a moment of arousal brings them along with the satisfaction of using someone else whom they consider a lesser individual. All of this in order to gain some instant self satisfaction, even if there are major risks involved.

Weiner is the classic, text book example of a malignant narcissist who has absolutely no real sorrow about what he did. Truly, he is angry that he was caught by those who he feels are lesser individuals than he and they spoiled his fun - if only for a while. A narcissist who is perverted in a manner that he must surf the net or Tweet women to get a thrill, will not stop totally. He can't. He is sick and dependent on the "high" he gets from being a sneaky cyber sex pervert. He will halt for a while, but he will return somehow

the pregnancy just highlights his perv behavior with that of an innocent wife....and theWeiner is NOT innocent, he just looks like a bigger perv.......the gym pics came out after that along with the fact that he had inappropriate contact with a minor. nothing good for theWeiner at all.

Liberal psychobabble pap! Disorders are not necessarily disabilities.
12.00 Mental Disorders - Adult
The evaluation of disability on the basis of mental disorders requires documentation of a medically determinable impairment(s), consideration of the degree of limitation such impairment(s) may impose on the individual's ability to work, and consideration of whether these limitations have lasted or are expected to last for a continuous period of at least 12 months.

As long as he is in “treatment” he will try and claim protection under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

This will be tremendous fun to watch as it will tie the Democrats absolutely in knots.

That should spin things out until the next election, which, judging by recent polls in his district, he stands at least a 50-50 shot at winning.

Whoa! First I am not a Liberal. Second this was not psychobabe or pap. Perhaps, before you criticized me, you would have realized that I did not mean “disability” in the sense of a handicap. I am sorry you misunderstood. I meant that the narcissist has an emotional dysfunction - a disconnect. Her/his mental state is affected by an abnormal fear of being de-valued, unloved or unwanted. So they compensate by seeking power, control, or even by abusing all who they consider to be lesser individuals. A narcissist is emotionally void of normal feelings and understandings for others. They truly live in an emotional wasteland where they have to constantly seek praise, adoration and power. They cannot supply themselves with good feelings and can only use or manipulate others into adoring them.
