Coral Gables: Keep parked pickup trucks out of sight overnight

CORAL GABLES— Starting this month, the city of Coral Gables will issue warning notices to owners of pickup trucks who do not park their trucks inside their garages at night.

Since the 1960s, the city has banned people from parking their pickup trucks in their driveways or on city streets from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

After Aug. 8, Coral Gables will start issuing tickets to people who violate the parking ban.

The city has resumed enforcement of this controversial law because last month, the Florida Supreme Court decided not to consider an appeal by Lowell Kuvin, who sued Coral Gables in 2003 after code enforcement officers cited him for parking his pickup truck on a residential street.

City spokeswoman Maria Rosa Higgins Fallon said, "Historically, Coral Gables has gone through great lengths to preserve its character through the enforcement of its zoning code, a reason why in a downward economy, property values in Coral Gables have fared better than in other neighboring communities."

Fallon said Tuesday she didn't know how much fines would be.

I guess if you only own a pickup, you’re screwed. Who came up with this crazy law? Someday it will be only high dollar cars allowed on the streets.

Stay away rednecks! And Mexicans!

It does make for an unsightly neighborhood when every driveway has a car or two in it.

This sounds like the kind of crap you’d see in an HOA. But that being said, what could possibly be the reasoning for such a law?

Private truck on private driveway no good? That sounds a lot like a “TAKING”.

If the city feels the WHOLE city would profit by this measure at the trouble of truck owners, then why not compensate them...?

Interesting that as the state intrudes deeper and deeper into peoples’ lives they have less and less money at their disposal.

I think Flossmor IL has a similar law as well.

Reminds me when worked for my previous company, I got in trouble for parking my truck in front of some low level exec’s window. She was originally from Maryland in the DC area. I was told to park the truck away from the building.

Usually the liberal types are the ones that complain about cheaper vehicles especially old pickup trucks !

Government= Can’t provide jobs, Can’t keep people from losing their homes, Can’t keep our borders secure, can’t keep our children safe from homos and other perverts, but can keep you safe from the sight of pick-ups trucks parked in a homeowners driveway.........

Sounds like a bunch of limosine-liberal racists, which use tactics such as this to keep certain “undesirables” out of “their” town, under the guise of not wanting to alter the towns “character” or “complexion”. What they are really saying is, “All you darkies and poor white trash find somewhere else to live.”

I like your truck. It shows character and I bet it runs real good, too.

I had a very pretty Mustang, a 1966, that I spiffied up, and some dirt bag stole it right out of a secure parking lot! Eventually the police recovered it hundreds of miles away and of course, it was banged-up.

The lesson I learned is don’t keep the vehicle looking as though you just drove it off a showroom floor. Leave trash inside and a good coating of dirt on the outside. A fine running machine doesn’t have to look like it cost a fortune. It is transportation and maybe something practical, like hauling tools or a load of hay.

I’d be willing to bet most modern pickups will not fit in the garage of most of the older homes. Hell, my brand new in 2003 cracker-box won’t even allow me to park two vehicles side-by-side. My 1994 K-3500 Extended Cab Dually would not have fit, even at an angle.
