Texas Senate passes bill on cities aiding illegal immigrants

(Reuters) - The Texas Senate early on Wednesday passed a measure pushed by Governor Rick Perry aimed at cracking down on cities that provide sanctuary to illegal immigrants.

"Drug traffickers and transnational gangs should think twice before they step foot in Texas," Lt. Governor David Dewhurst, who presides over the Senate, said in a statement. "Prohibiting sanctuary city policies will make the apprehension, detention and deportation of dangerous criminals more uniform -- keeping us all safer and Texas more secure."

The measure now heads to the House, which passed a similar bill during the regular legislative session that ended May 30. That measure died because Senate Democrats blocked it. But lawmakers are now in a special legislative session, and since different rules apply, Senate Democrats were unable to stop it this time. Both chambers have Republican majorities.

The measure would prohibit local governments from banning law enforcement officers from asking about the immigration status of people who are lawfully detained or arrested.

I’m still furious at him over the TTC and eminent domain. He didn’t stand with Arizona and I don’t know if he’ll even sign this bill if it passes.

I hate him almost as much as I despise Romney.

The next Texas legislative session will be two months after the 2012 national election. With any luck the donks will loose any ability to block serious conservative legislation.

Also, there probably will no longer be a Holder DOJ making childish threats to our legislators.

Glad to see Texas doing the right thing! I hope all the states do this.

What kind of morons want more people coming into their country when unemployment is high?
What kind of morons want more crime in their country?

Our votes are going to be very important in 2012.

They’re not only doing it in secret enclaves but also openly in this administration.

Whoa! “Another World is possible”!?!?! The Third World?

Yes, we've seen it. That's why people escape from that other possible world and sneak over the border illegally into ours.

These dimwits need to study the 20th century. Find out about how their fond dreams of a Wanker's Paradise turning into the deaths of 100 million innocent people and the suffering of who knows how many hundreds of millions more.

They are correct, another world IS possible. It's best to avoid that world like the plague that it is!

Perry must have a record making him look like a conservative....Perry is not a conservative...he is a moderate Republican...and a typical politican...

“Perry is not a conservative...he is a moderate Republican...and a typical politican...”

“Moderate” is a stretch. “Politician” yes for sure. He will stay on the right now that election is over because it’s highly unlikely he will run for gov again where he needs to dance to the middle.

He’s loving the attention he’s getting from Rush and the press, but those of us that know him best aren’t super enthused with him. Re: Arizona support, Trans-Texas, vaccinations of young girls. But he sure talks a good game.

Dewhurst is trying to act like a right-winger now too. Too late! He’s a real jerk who’s trying to become our next US Senator. Hopefully, Poe, Smith, Williams, or Abbott can cut his @$$ off at the pass.

But, all in all ending the sanctuary cities bill is a good thing, even though enforcement may not be prevalent.

This is like whack-a-mole. Texas passes a tough immigration law, and all the illegals stampede to another state. Maybe the entire south can push all the illegals into New York and watch the state go bankrupt.

"Is this a trick to bolster his GOP nomination chances or is he serious about illegal problem? If yes, I think I’m ready to join Perry bandwagon. "

I'm not at all sure that this will help him in the very brown State of Texas.

Welcome aboard!

Once, this special session is over...Perry will announce his candidacy for President.

“What kind of morons want more people coming into their country when unemployment is high?”

Anybody who’s got a job related to tourism?

What moron wants more productive people who pay taxes and create jobs during a downturn?

The key is to separate the wheat from the chaff.

I agree that our leaders arent too serious about it,
but given that, this bill is a good step forward.

“Remind me again who insisted on getting the DREAM ACT pushed down Texan’s wallets allowing illegals to pay in-state college tuition?”

Not just Perry FYI. A new State Senator ( Brian Birdwell ?) tried to get it repealed this year and couldnt even get a VOTE on it in the Texas Senate. Other states have moved against it, I am not sure why Texas keeps it. Another case of our GOP leaders not wanting to tick off the Hispanic vote.
Tipping point getting reached, with majority of births being hispanic in Texas.

This is a good thing. I have a hard time understanding why legal citizens of the U.S. who are from Mexico would want illegals to be able to access the same benefits and privilege that they got legally.

I’m glad my city will not longer be a sanctuary city... it is already majority Mexican.

Of course, it will depend on what the local people actually do but it’s a good start.

Just be careful as Perry has been known to walk softly and carry a small stick when addressing the illegal alien problems facing Texas. After all, now in his third term what meaningful changes has he really made regarding the many problems?!

We need a law like Alabama's to do that.

We would have if Guv Goodhair had any gonads! He is doing what he does best, primping in front of the cameras and trying to talk tough (a little anyway).

I was thinking California. Sorry about that but I am not all that confident that there will be any way out for CA other than complete collapse. Besides, there is not enough room in NY.

Perhaps then they will at least TRY to run off the illegals.

So what? Marco Rubio didn’t “stand with Arizona” either. Every governor has to gage the amount they can do when they have huge latino populations in their states.
