Unhappy Vancouver Canucks fans are rioting in downtown Vancouver, and people are looting merchandise from The Bay and London Drugs.
Young people unhappy about the Canucks' loss to the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final broke windows at The Bay on Georgia Street and rioters were looting merchandise from the store from the Seymour Street side.
Huge crowds gathered around the London Drugs location on Granville Street as people trashed the inside of the store and made off with stolen goods.
Rioters danced around a burning van outside the store, tossing bottles into the blaze to create small explosions. A BMW was set on fire nearby, and an apparently drunken man jumped straight into the flames, falling back seemingly unscathed.
The scene downtown bears unsettling similarities to the 1994 riots, when drunken Vancouver fans took to the streets after a Game 7 loss to the New York Rangers.

As you can tell from my locale and tagline, I'm not too far from the Mexican border. That nation is populated by people who hate America -- but they swarm across the border to take advantage of our largess, all the while waving their Mexican flags and speaking their Spanish. They don't adapt to our culture or our values.
The anti-American mindset of Canadians is a harder puzzle to crack. We speak the same language, are mostly descended from the same culture and much more than the Mexicans, share the same values. Yet, like you, I've detected a smugness on the part of many Canadians when I travel there. Sure, we'll have regional (and national differences), but Canada ought to be thankful to have a truly good neighbor like the United States.
The "fans" in Montreal rioted when the Habs won in 1993 so I'm not sure why this is so surprising to the writer.
Canadian TV has been covering this since the game ended at 10:45pm ET.
In the last hour or two they showed people hanging around and observing cars on fire and stores being looted.
The live reporter was only a few feet from one of the cars on fire. Really putting himself at risk in the middle of the chaos. Eventually the smoke built up and onlookers had to retreat from the car fires.
The politeness stereotype has experienced a setback.

Absolutely despicable. And did you hear the Canuck fans booing loudly during the presentation of the Stanley Cup to the Bruins? I actually thought Vancouver Canuck fans had more class than that. (Philadelphia on the other hand...)

As mentioned above, Vanc. lost the cup in the 90s and riots went on downtown; it was shown on the TV show World’s Wildest Police Videos. It was said on Ch 7 Boston that “a bunch of
people left with about 2 and a half minutes left in the game”. By co-incidence, that’s when the B’s scored the empty net goal to make it 4-0. But enough people stayed around to boo.

I see that around HERE - in the U.S. “Canada has this, Canada has that, in Canada we do it...” Once in awhile I ask them (knowing the answer) - “Well why don’t you move back to Canada?” “I couldn’t get a job there that would pay me HALF of what I’m making down here.”

Think I remember that. Looted fancy stores etc. Of course
a couple people died in Boston celebrations; Victoria Snelgrove (IIRC) died in freak accident after Sox WS win,
and someone died (run over?) after a Super Bowl Pats win.
The police/city was being cautious in terms of not allowing
a viewing party at the Garden.
From what I saw on Ch 7 after game, a crowd formed (outside of the bars) in No. Station area but peaceful AFAIK

Some Canadians may make fun of US, etc. In 2000 the Can. TV show This Hour Has 30 Minutes fooled then-Pres candidate George W. Bush by saying “Prime Minister Poutine has endorsed you” and they yukked it up (poutine is a dish)
Must have been one hell of a game.
After the Sawks won in 2004 we had riots at UVM. Seems a bit weird to be getting all worked up hundreds of miles from the event.
This is like when the Canadian girls Olympic team won and then they broke the rules by sitting on the ice, drinking beers and smoking cigars.
I understand a Bruins fan was found stabbed to death and thrown off a bridge...
