I knew it’s early in the process but I don’t think conservatives should be offering any kind of support to candidates like Santorum. I don’t think he’ll go anywhere but he doesn’t deserve any support at this point.
Let’s see...that would be 15 years ago. The duty of a Congresscritter has always been to get the perks for his district. For better or for worse, if it was out there, it was his duty to get it. He wasn’t a policy-maker, and there was a lot of money flowing around at that time.
Actually, I like Santorum but I wasn’t really gung-ho...until now. Anybody the Dems are trying to destroy must have something going for him!

Here is the DUTY of any Congressman, according to the Constitution:

Yes, but realistically speaking, Congressman have always been the little guy’s voice in DC, particularly when this meant a project that could bring bucks to their districts.
One of the reasons certain Congressmen were so popular even though they were totally lame in other ways was that you could literally complain to them about a lack of street lighting in your town ... and if they were clever, it would get fixed.
Is this a good thing? No, but that’s reality. I don’t think one can blame Santorum for getting things for his district.
Tracking technology paid for by the government that can serve advanced taxation schemes such as peak usage fees does indeed suck. And the cameras allow for expansion beyond just EZ pass holders.
Plus you were a bit wrong about the rad scanners. Not about the distance most alphas travel — the limit of direct detection. But here I went and looked up just a couple of articles that use alternative technology than sees alphas farther away.
Admittedly I overestimated how far that technology progressed to date, but when I first saw these poles going up on the side of the road I thought they housed air sampling radiation detection devices, and that gave me to speculate about the other parts hanging on them which I later learned were EZ pass scanners, as I did.
In any case this is a very timely article to post. Mr. Santorum and his supporters should welcome it. It’s an opportunity to explain, expound and expand—to reach outwards towards concerned voters. That’s the way of winners.
You seem to take the posting of it as a entree to complain, to demand silent compliance, to hector, to cloak. To belittle the concerned. That’s the way of losers.
Yes I can blame ANY representative who turns government into a hog farm with hogs to be slaughtered, butchered, cured, canned and shipped back to his district. THAT is against the oath.
Agreed, there should be no federal fuel tax. But as long as it exists, the people paying it should derive some benefit from it.
If Rick Santorum was simply demanding that federal gas taxes paid by Pennsylvania motorists be spent on frivolous gadgets to be installed on highways in Pennsylvania, what is wrong with that?

Clearly, there is a divide between people who believe in an ideology and people like you who are in it for the freebies you get by robbing other people.

Oh for pete’s sake. Nobody is robbing anybody. As I pointed out, the money was there and it was there for projects of that sort. He would have been remiss if he didn’t try to get it for his district.
Would he even vote for a project like this now? I doubt it.
But don’t cut him down for something done 15 years ago that was neither illegal, immoral or something that every congress critter didn’t think he was sent there to do.
I don’t know what planet you live on, but it sure ain’t this one.
That money is collected by the federal government. Should it be collected (in such quantities)? No.
But it is and it is then either spent to buy a new jet for the president or spent on somebody’s highway project or somebody’s insane research project or simply given away (like the 6 billion dollars shipped to Iraq that disappeared).
In an ideal world, the entire tax system would be revised and the federal government wouldn’t get enough money to be able to throw it away. But as long as it is what it is, getting something for his district is what a congressman does, and there’s far worse uses of the money.
Why are some folks here suddenly digging up stuff done 15 years ago...as I said, neither illegal nor immoral, nor, in fact, necessarily wrong...to attack somebody who is pretty conservative in other ways? Are we doing “circular firing squad,” or are we doing Dem operative stuff?
We best be doing Dem operative stuff, because the Primary season is the exactly proper time and place to do it!
If we are slack about digging up all the dirt, emptying the closets of skeletons and airing them out, those very Dem operatives will make the most of them come election time.
