Governor Rick Perry's Speech at Red State Conference in 2010 (Video and Notes)

Video and Notes of Governor Rick Perry at Red State Conference in 2010

FReepers,

In doing my homework on Rick Perry I found this video. It’s about 30 minutes long. I watched and took notes. If you have time to watch it you will hear it complete and in context, delivered in his style and with his inflection.

My notes while watching video of speech:

Opening minutes of video is folksy fun and warm up schtick. At 4 minutes in, Rick Perry takes a nice shot at the “legacy” media then goes into his thoughts about the Constitution, the 10th Amendment and the struggle between the Right and the Left -- how the country is ready “fixin’ to” to swing back.

He addresses his talk to the conservative blogosphere:

James Madison and Thomas Jefferson would be very comfortable in this room today.

Thanks those who went to the sport shooting range a day earlier.

Reads the 10th Amendment – What a beautiful succinct, simple statement – words penned for a time such as this…… (nice list of rights being taken away and by whom).

Republicans lost because you couldn’t tell the difference between a Republican and a Democrat… (expands)

Growing mood in the country – passion across the state and when I look at Glenn Beck’s event in Washington D.C. and other events, it warms the cockles of my heart……”

Texas has led but it’s been a hell of a struggle against Washington D.C. – they must trust the people, they don’t trust the people.

Governing isn’t that hard…

First – Don’t spend all the money!

TX legislature meets 140 days every OTHER year!

TARP – Stimulus – great concern in Texas, country, world --- small businesses don’t know what shoe will fall next – what regulations – costs – job loss. Health care bill – cost – loss of access to health care…..

Second: Fair and predictable tax and regulatory policy…..

Third: Legal system that does not allow for over suing. Sweeping tort reform 2003 in TX has paid HUGE dividends. Went from Jack-pot Justice (legal hell hole) to 60% more doctors practicing in Texas from 7 years ago (expands more on this) – about access to health care.

Last step: Loser Pays tells them, you better have a case. If frivolous – fishing for settlement – they’ll foot the bill! (since this speech, Perry signed it into law)

Haley Barbour told him, If "Loser Pays" passes you can put turnstiles on the TX border and charge people to come into your state!”

THAT’S IT! Put those 4 principles into place and tell government to get the hell out of the way.

You also need to work with principled people.

Jan 2003 was first time there was Republican control of Texas and put Texas on the path that has led to the model it is today -- how you manage government to free people from legislation, litigation and regulation. Business are looking to TX (discusses Caterpillar’s move to TX. Discusses CA losing auto business to TX).

Because we’re a mobile society people can up and move and pick and choose where they want to live and work.

Why 10th Amendment so important to the people. If government continues to take our freedoms by delegating from D.C. [“this is how you’re going to get health care, educate your children, live your life”] -- then we have lost our republic and we have lost our freedom. This is worth fighting for, this is worth standing for…… This is where the rubber meets the road…

If people can risk their capital and get a return on their investment they can pay for good teachers, can pay for officers to be on the roads to protect you. You cannot have transportation infrastructure if you do not have the environment for entrepreneurs.

We are locked in a huge struggle against centralized government -- rationed opportunity, limited freedom...

Bloggers -- the firebrand to rally the people that I dare to speak to today about those who have grown drunk on power in D.C., you must remind your fellow Americans that our system gives them more power than any citizenry in the world…

Closes quoting "the Patron Saint of Conservatism." Ronald Reagan said: Freedom is never more than one generation removed from extinction. We don’t pass it on to our children in our blood stream. It must be fought for, protected and handed on to them to do the same. We will not be the generation that let freedom slip through our fingers. Instead let us be remembered as the generation that stood up for what is good about this country, put it back on the path established by our founding fathers…..

....that is a legacy we can all embrace. So let’s restore basic Constitutional values that set this Republic apart, spread the gospel of our conservative principles….

So, how do you think this would go over to a national audience?

Thanks for the Cliff Notes summary, I appreciate it.

He’s not my candidate and his approach to immigration is noxious to me, but I wouldn’t argue with any of his points as you’ve reported them.

Rick Perry is corrupt. Rick Perry took money from Merck and then tried to mandate that all girls be vaccinated with their product, Gardasil.

I don’t care about his speeches or his supposedly conservative bluster. His actions are what define him. Put simply, he’s corrupt. If you haven’t noticed, corruption has eaten our entire nation. Everything is corrupt from the White House on down to the local community. We tolerate lying and theiving at every level. Cheating is fine, as long as you don’t get caught. Anything you want to do is okay if you have ‘plausible deniability’. Taking payoffs from drug companies is just fine, because that’s ‘the way things work’.

It’s time to stop accepting a corrupt status quo and reject corrupt politicians. It is time to say no to Rick Perry and politicians like him.

His immigration stance is the big killer for me.

I think we've had enough mention of this kind of thing for a while - ;d) Kidding aside - good summary.

Which immigration stance? The one that shows up in his words close to election time or the one that shows up in those pesky actions of his?

If parents didn’t want their daughters vaccinated for cervical cancer they could have opted out.

Do you disapprove of the vaccination of children?

We need 1,000 National Guard troops to support current law enforcement operations on our border until they can provide those 3,000 more border patrol agents. We also need Predator drones flying along the Texas-Mexico border providing real time intel to our state and local operation centers.

Source: Speech at 2011 Conservative Political Action Conference Feb 11, 2011

Note the absence of actually "securing" the border to prevent illegals from crossing. The Feds put NG troops in Arizona. They did nothing in terms of operational security. And how long would these NG troops have to be there before those 3000 or so agents were made available?

In addition, his idea of illegals being deported is centered on those convicted of crimes. And he's in favor of a program for importing farm workers from Mexico. This surely won't fly well with millions of Americans out of work.

Horse pucky. Don’t change the subject. I disapprove of corruption. Perry took money from Merck and then mandated the use of their product.

The legislature had to override his corrupt power-grab.

Do you approve of corruption?

The problem with Cliff’s Notes is that you can read them cover to cover and still fail the test. :)

Other states leaving Secure Communities (TX expands ICE program] "As Texas moves toward expanding Secure Communities, several northern states are dropping out of the program that matches the fingerprints of those arrested against a U.S. [ICE] database.

Last week, before Gov. Rick Perry's announcement that the expansion of Secure Communities would be on the agenda for the Legislature's special session, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick announced his state will not take part in the program...."

Reuters: [excerpt] "Perry, in Mexico with a Texan trade mission seeking opportunities in areas like renewable energy, said the federal government’s plan to build a wall along much of the border to keep out illegal immigrants was “idiocy.”

“We need those individuals to continue to grow our economy,” Perry told a briefing with reporters.

“If you show up illegally, without your card or you’re here as a criminal element, I’m for throwing the book at those folks, but the issue of people who want to legally, thoughtfully and appropriately come to America to work and help us build our economy — we should quickly come up with a program and an identification card to do that.” [end excerpt] Source

His immigration stance is the big killer for me.

His campaigning for a pro-abortion candidate for the Presidency in 2008 mostly kills the deal for me (but I have a long list of things that he's done that pissed conservatives off), but definitely does for really serious pro-lifers like my wife. She would vote for a pro-life third party before voting for Perry after he supported Giuliani.

We already have a pathway to citizenship. We also have a visa program for people wanting to come to America on a temporary basis. Why do we have to come up with a program to do that?

Also, if Israel can build a fence, so can we. And if farmers and ranchers want labor, then look to Americans first. In today’s economy, the old saw about doing jobs Americans won’t do doesn’t work.

If you disapprove of corruption, you're going to love this.

A Perry donor applied for millions of dollars of taxpayer money, and Perry signed off on it, but kept it quiet. On the application, among other problems, 2 out of the 3 directors that were listed, were never directors of the company. The director that was a legitimate director, was a Perry donor. The two directors that were not actual directors, one had been a consultant to Perry's staff, the other worked on a council run out of the Governor's office. The legitimate director was listed as a good businessman, even though he had taken millions of taxpayer dollars in the past (also approved by Perry) for another company that ended up bankrupt.
