NBA gets highest marks for racial and gender hiring
South Florida Sun-Sentinel ^ | June 16, 2011 | Craig Davis

The NBA received the highest grade ever issued on racial and gender hiring practices among men's professional leagues, continuing a recent trend.

The league received an A+ for race and an A- on gender for a combined A in this year's Racial and Gender Report Card from the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at the University of Central Florida.

While the NFL and Major League Baseball have shown significant improvement on racial and gender hiring in recent years, the NBA is the only men's pro league to receive a combined A. TIDES has been studying diversity hiring in sports since 1987.

The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at the University of Central Florida.

Never in the furthest reaches of my imagination could I conjure up such an "institute." Who in their right mind would dream up such a thing? Why do they exist? Just to shake down those organizations who don't get an "A"? What scores did the NHL, the PGA, and NASACAR get? Are they inherently racist organizations?

The NBA is about 95% black!

Blacks are about 13% of the population.

I get it. Million-man math.

I concur, there just aren’t enough white guys or woman on teams in the NFL but they are now showing significant improvement according to this study.

How many Islamists play in the NBA? Palestinians? Hispanics? Asians? Native Americans? Transgenders? Women? Wookies?

Well, thank goodness for the NBA!! This explains why the membership is so representative of the general population. Viva diversity!

TIDES...noted a decrease in the percentage of African-American players [in Major League Baseball] on opening day rosters from 10 to 8.5 percent from 2010

And the percentage of white players in the NBA is....?

If the NBA picked folks for their teams in a way that represented the general population there would be no such thing as professional basketball. It wouldn't even rise to the level of pickup basketball games in city parks.

Their gender and race hiring scores come from OFF the court.

When they have gender and race parity ON the court, then I'll believe their claims.

Among highlights of the NBA's report card for the 2010-11 season: Persons of color made up 83 percent of players, the highest ever reported. African Americans made up 78 percent of the players, equaling the highest mark since 2001-02. There were nine African-American head coaches, one more than the previous year, and one Asian, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra. Women made up 42 percent of professional employees in the league office. Sacramento's Marina Kolokotronis and New Jersey's Irina Pavlova became the first women team presidents since 2007-08. Only 15 percent of team vice presidents are women.

To give high paying jobs to people who would otherwise have to dig ditches for a living due to their lack of real education.

The NHL will continue to be the better sport in America, and not get involved in racism and sexism when it comes to hiring.

Also, they’re tougher than baseball players.

If I recall correctly there was quite a bit of grumbling about racism a few years ago when Steve Nash won the MVP twice.
