Policy making for Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria is moving from the Defense Minister to the Prime Minister's Office.. The move could be the result of an initiative by Coalition Chairman MK Ze'ev Elkin (Likud) and MK Miri Regev (Likud), who demanded that authority over construction be taken away from Barak after they visited Efrat in February.
Defense Minister Ehud Barak had requested a delay in discussing any such action until he was to return from Paris. Nevertheless, on Sunday the government authorized the transfer of responsibility for the Settlement Department of the World Zionist Organization from the Agriculture Ministry, where it was put in the coalition agreement, to the PMO. The Settlement Department, formed after the Six Day War, includes a budget for construction in Judea and Samaria.
In effect, the action removes from Barak's control chief responsibility and veto power for new settlement and building policies in Judea and Samaria and places it directly under that of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. The defense minister's agreement will not be necessary in advance of decisions. The Agriculture Ministry is headed by Atsmaut (Barak's breakaway from Labor party) MK Orit Noked, who followed Barak's policies.

Time to straighten out the “Defense” Department?

First step: Sack Barak.
Next step: annex Judea and Samaria.
Not necessarily in that order. So long as Barak is sacked and Judah and Samariah are annexed ASAP.
Next step: Sack Barack.

GOOD! I am very happy that Bibi has learned from his first stint as PM not to rely on or kowtow to a US President who is either up for election or interested in his “place in history” and who, in either case, couldn’t give a rat’s posterior about Israel. Kudos to you, PM Netanyahu. Keep sticking it in the faces of both Barak and Barack.
Why does Barrack get to make settlement policy? I thought that was what the whole staredown in Washington was about the other week.
Ehud Barak, Minister of Defense, although it is hard to tell them apart at times.
Don’t you think this has more to do with the supposed meetings that will take place between Bibi and the Pali leader? This way the PM has the cards to play and can’t be embarrassed or vetoed by his cabinet.
Bibi thinks he can play his games with the PA and the USA. We can play a few new games with him.
