Does GOP want Perry's DREAM act too?
Washington Times Water Cooler Blog ^ | 6/19/11 | Kerry Picket

n the midst of a number of conservatives believing Governor Rick Perry, Texas Republican, is the GOP's answer to taking on President Barack Obama, squishy aspects of Mr. Perry's background are being overlooked. As a border state governor, Mr. Perry signed state immigration law in 2001 known as the Texas DREAM Act. Here is an excerpt from a speech Governor Perry gave during the border summit in August of 2001: (bolding is mine)

As a compassionate state, we know that for our children to succeed, they must not only be healthy, but educated. The future leaders of our two nations are learning their fractions and their ABC’s in classrooms all along this border. Immigrants from around the world are being taught in Texas classrooms, and our history is rich with examples of new citizens who have made great contributions. We must say to every Texas child learning in a Texas classroom, “we don’t care where you come from, but where you are going, and we are going to do everything we can to help you get there.” And that vision must include the children of undocumented workers. That’s why Texas took the national lead in allowing such deserving young minds to attend a Texas college at a resident rate. Those young minds are a part of a new generation of leaders, the doors of higher education must be open to them. The message is simple: educacion es el futuro, y si se puede.

Signed legislation to provide in-state tuition for illegal aliens.

Signed legislation to prohibit teens from using tanning salons.

Signed legislation to require high school athletes to be tested for steroids.

Signed legislation requiring adults to wear seat belts in the backseat of cars.

Attempted to mandate that 11 year old girls be vaccinated against HPV.

Perry probably isn’t running. According to aid of his two days ago, they were talking about setting up an daunting task of setting up a campaign in flash (cold turkey). They said that Perry likes the attention nationally.

Do not forget that he also tried to give hundreds of thousands of acres of private land to a foreign nation (one that seems to be going bankrupt) in order to build the Trans-Texas Corridor with money from the Texas tax-payers.

The only reason he is being pushed is that the media knows he's more beatable than Romney.

Where did the sudden Perry push come from? That what I want to know. Are conservatives trying to push Perry as an “electable” replacement for Romney, or are the RINOs moving to Perry because they see Romney as unelectable?

From what I've read so far, Perry seems like yet another Bush compassionate conservative, aka big government aficionado.

AND he voluntarily accepted the invitation from the BILDERBERGERS to attend their secretive meeting in TURKEY , 2008.

"AND he voluntarily accepted the invitation from the BILDERBERGERS to attend their secretive meeting in TURKEY"

I find it troubling that Perry would fly all the way to Turkey to go to BILDERBURGERS when he could stay in Texas and go to Fat Ho Burgers.

No, he's being pushed by the GOP-E and the "Anybody But Palin" crowd after Daniels' wife said no, Gingrich self-immolated, Romney doubled-down on Romneycare, and Pawlenty proved toothless in the debate.

I just don’t trust him, esp. after his hissy fit at the governor’s convention in 2009.

Yeah, he and the other GOP governors showed their true colors when he yanked the mike away from Palin.

Perry will say anything to get elected, but that’s where it ends. He promised to secure the border then two weeks after election told us “It ain’t gonna happen.”

The only thing he’s got going is he’s pro-life.

Yes, it is. Amnesty would kill this country and it’s a major risk. What Perry has said and done on the subject in the last couple of years, leading up to a presidential bid, is suspect because he’s preening for a run.

This earlier stuff IMO is far more telling—and critical.

I would not be surprised to see a Perry/Bachman or Perry/Pawlenty ticket. Not my dream ticket but very true to the GOP formula.

And like Reagan, he’s a former DemocRat. And he seems to be in favor of toll roads. But despite all of his negatives, he has done a good job in Texas as a conservative leader. And isn’t that the main criteria for being a leader?

.

Perry wants passage of a measure requiring every person arrested to be run through the federal immigration databases as part of the Secure Communities program. He also wants to provide the state Department of Public Safety with the authority to make sure someone is in the U.S. legally before issuing a driver’s license.
These measures, along with a ban on sanctuary cities, would “provide a clear message that Texas will not turn a blind eye to those breaking our laws,” Perry said in a statement.
“Texas owes it to the brave law enforcement officials, who put their lives on the line every day to protect our families and communities, to give them the discretion they need to adequately do their jobs,” Perry said.

.Gov. Perry has made numerous requests of the federal govt. to enforce the border in Texas including handing Pre. Obama a letter in person when he landed in Dallas last year.

. Signed into law photo ID required before voting.

What have the other governors done about illegal immigration??
