I don’t know about this Bolivian group, but in general, Mennonites do not live communally. It is not part of their doctrine. They live in families. You may be thinking of the Hutterites: they’re communal. Different group.

I’m thinking of old order Mennonites, who are quite collective and kibbutz type in their community. There are more modern Mennonites who are integrated into society and use technology. I suspect the father was old order Mennonite.
