Health officials unveil graphic tobacco warning labels
The Chicago Tribune ^ | June 21, 2011 | Reuters

Dead bodies, diseased lungs and a man on a ventilator were among the graphic images for revamped tobacco labels unveiled on Tuesday by U.S. health officials.

Proposed in November under a law that put the multibillion-dollar tobacco industry under the control of the Food and Drug Administration, the new labels must be on cigarette packages and in advertisements starting in October 2012.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg were to announce the nine new warnings at the White House, but the labels were released early Tuesday at

http://www.fda.gov/TobaccoProducts/Labeling/CigaretteWarningLabels/default.htm.

They show images that may disturb some, including one titled "WARNING: Cigarettes are addictive," illustrated with a photograph of a man smoking a cigarette through a hole in his throat.

Others messages point out the dangers of secondhand smoke to children, tobacco's causal link to fatal lung disease, cancer, strokes, heart disease and death.

Sebelius said their goal is to stop children from starting to smoke and offer adults who want to quit some help.

"We have about 4,000 people under 18 who try their first cigarette and about 1,000 of them become permanent smokers. And that's not good for our country," she told the CBS "Early Show."

"This is really aimed at making sure kids don't start in the first place."

Sebelius, you have to know that you and your bureaucrats are schizophrenic about this.

In all probability, these ads were paid for by taxes on cigarettes, thus forming another useless circle.

This is stupid. If smokes are so "evil," then the government should ban them, right?

I like how the morons who came up with this policy cite how it has worked so effectively in other countries when anyone with half a brain knows that this isn't even remotely true.

Government is the only true smoking addict. If all the smokers in the country dropped the habit today, government would be screaming about the dearth of smokes tax revenue. If anything, government should be encouraging people to smoke, just to collect that extra money.

And before anyone flames me, no I do not believe that smokes, or any other form of recreational drugs, should be banned. I am just using that logical assertion to show that government still wants to play the fool's game of being on both sides of this issue.

cigarettes cause cancer.
abortions cause breast cancer.
marijuana causes nothing.

yet we tax the heck out of one,
subsidize the second,
and declare a costly war on the third ?

At some foreign airport (Heathrow? Munich? Montreal? don’t recall which) I happened across a large walk-thru ad/sculpture for cigarettes. Couldn’t tell if it was a spoof or serious, with all the “buy me! smoke me!” promotion equally juxtaposed with the “danger! warning!” graphic imagery. Heck, the experience was so surreal it was a bit hard to tell if it was real or a movie. I’m sure I saw something like it years ago on film as a spoof of the future, and then was startled to find myself in it.

I'm sorry....Those pictures are just plain wrong.

As long as the nation is headed in this direction, we should place labels in clearly observable places which say, in bold letters, “Working for government rots your brain.”

And, of course, there should be distinct and graphic labels to match.

What in the hell is the gooberment gonna do when every smoker in America quits? What are these pencil-necked dweeb tobacco Nazi’s gonna do when every smoker in America quits? They’re gonna kill their own cash cow if they’re not careful. Call their bluff. Someone in Congress present a bill making tobacco illegal in America. Hub and I quit the first of this year.......not because we wanted to but because we had to and I’d love to see every smoker do the same but I’m sure not gonna demonize and harrass those who do smoke.

have you noticed that the states that ban smoking in public places- specifically bars and restaurants- are all having increasingly worse budget problems? when they do make the connection that there's a huge loss of tax revenue because people are either smoking less or quitting, the solution is to raise taxes, not to repeal the law.

technically, neither cigarettes nor abortions cause cancer, they just increase your likelihood of getting it.

I have an occasional cigar maybe a couple of times a year but

those who enjoy using a legal product on a daily basis should tell all those who demonize their freedom to piss-off.

I respect this soldier a hell of a lot more than some hypocrite federal stooge like this lying POS
