Staff quit because "I'm different," Gingrich says Photo 11:04am EDT

By David Beasley

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on Wednesday attributed the mass resignations among his campaign staff to the fact that he is "very different" from mainstream politicians.

"Philosophically, I am very different from normal politicians, and normal consultants found that very hard to deal with," Gingrich said in a speech to the Atlanta Press Club.

"We have big ideas. I just think that's part of how you campaign. You talk to the American people about big things."

I once thought Newt was intelligent, but flawed.

I now wonder about his mental health.

Then why did he hire “normal consultants” to run his campaign?

Exactly what I was thinking. He wants to be the country’s CEO but he can’t even hire staff that agree with his vision?

See ya Newt.

"We have big ideas. I just think that's part of how you campaign. You talk to the American people about big things."

Big Idea #1: Let's vacation in Greece.
Big Idea #2: Hire people who don't like how you campaign.
Big Idea #3: Hire people who don't like how you raise money.

This is actually kind of sad to watch...while never a great fan of Newt’s I liked listening to him and was glad he was around. Seeing him disintegrate this way is humiliating for him- particularly since I don’t think he understands how embarrassed he ought to feel..

Newt does have big ideas and he can when mentally on be a great advocate for and defender of the conservative cause. He should always be credited with the great 1994 victory.

Unfortunately, for every great speech or idea there is a Pelosi on the couch moment or just an incredible greed for more money.

Newt would be an excellent director of NASA in the coming conservative administration. Space seems to suit him now.

You exactly expressed my feelings. The problem with 'heroes' these days is they live long enough to obliterate their own legacies. Stay well, Newt.

Everyone is quitting because they realize Newt is not a serious candidate. He is just running to raise his profile/salary for a TV gig or whatever.

Another question is why those "normal consultants" agreed to come aboard to begin with? Did they not already know that he was "different"?

“look for the “I’m different” coffee mugs, bbq apron and mouse pad on my website”, Gingrich said.

Some of those advisors, such as Rick Tyler, had been with Newt for many years. Either Newt wasn't "very different from normal politicians" until a few weeks ago, or he's just blowing smoke. I'm going with the smoke option.

“I don’t think he understands how embarrassed he ought to feel,” is exactly the right way to say it, SE Mom. It’s been this way for a long time. He didn’t understand how embarrassed he ought to have felt when he said he believes that there’s an anthropogenic vector to global warming. He didn’t understand how embarrassed he ought to have felt when he supported Dede Scozzafava, and he didn’t understand how embarrassed he ought to have felt when he supported Mike Castle. That’s it in a nutshell.
