Growing, drying, and refining tobacco is difficult, that is probably why the Indians never developed cigarettes, we would all be growing our own to replace Marlboros, if it was possible.

Indians used it sparingly, ceremonially, and my own Indian grandmother grew her own for chewing, but she couldn't have produced cigarettes, and she is the only member in the family that used that coarse tobacco.

Growing good marijuana for smoking is relatively expensive and takes a good deal of time and knowledge. It’s not cheap or easy.
