The Federal Bureau of Investigation likes to claim it always gets its man, sometimes in a hail of bullets, like Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, occasionally through the tax code, which is how it nabbed Al Capone.

But it may have set a new mark for inventiveness in apprehension on Wednesday night in Santa Monica, California, by using advertisements in dental and plastic surgery journals to capture James “Whitey” Bulger, the South Boston Irish gang leader who has been on the run since 1994 and who was once the FBI’s own man, serving as its informant for many years against other criminal syndicates.

“serving as its informant for many years against other criminal syndicates.”

So was he hiding from the FBI or the gangsters he was rating on?

This guy is dead if he goes to jail thanks to the FBI outing him.

The FBI gave him and his gang free rein while they ratted on the New England mafia. This included everything up to and including murder.

And I don’t doubt that this stopped at Connelly and Rico. They had to get approval from someone.

I know I could wiki this in 10 seconds, but... Did the FBI get Bonnie & Clyde? Was it an FBI man behind Capone’s tax “problems”? I don’t think so, but if I’m wrong, I’ll never admit it. :)

The government had to take him down. Extortion, vice, gambling, murder, you name it. The government has to maintain their monopoly.

It's pretty funny that the author used that example.

The FBI got John Dillinger.
The FBI got Pretty Boy Floyd.
The FBI got Baby Face Nelson.

The Texas Rangers got Bonnie & Clyde.

The linked site is a pita! I click on the link, it takes me to the story, but it’s darkened out, and has a register window. I click on “close” for the register window, and it opens the basic page with all the stories they’re covering. I click on the Bulger story, and the whole process repeats!

I wouldn’t call him a fall guy as he was most responsible for Whitey’s rain of terror not to mention the death of at least two people. He definately had others higher up that should also be in jail.

Treasury Dept. The IRS didn’t exist at the time, but it was the equivalent. Capone was put away for simple tax evasion.

No, the FBI did not get Bonnie & Clyde. I’m not sure about Al Capone. Maybe the Treasury Dept.?

The Texas Rangers got Bonnie & Clyde.

Yes, but they traded Sammy Sosa and Wilson Alvarez. ;-)

Don’t tell me Clyde’s gonna be able to hit a big-league curveball. I’ll believe it when I see it.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police frown on the FBI taking their slogan of always getting their man.

You can’t be a mobster or even a “hanger-on” without having a colorful nickname.
