Senator Mark Kelly?
Thats the question in political circles this week. The minute Kelly, 47, announced his retirement from the Navy and NASA Tuesday, the behind-the-scenes speculation thats been brewing for weeks went public: Will the husband of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords run for office himself?
One of Arizonas Senate seats is open in 2012, thanks to the retirement of Jon Kyl. Giffords has been polling way ahead of any other Democratic candidate, even amid uncertainty about her recovery. Now the name of her Gulf War vet-turned-astronaut husband is in play.
Gabrielle is working hard every day on her mission of recovery. I want to be by her side, Kelly wrote on Facebook Tuesday. Though he has not previously expressed an interest in elected office, he left an intriguing hint: After some time off, I will look at new opportunities and am hopeful that one day I will again serve our country.

That, sir, is a non-sequitur. See Glenn, John.
I lost whatever respect I had for John Glenn when he blocked the Senate’s investigation into Clinton’s illegal campaign funds from China.
The RATS want to turn Gabby Gifford into the new Jim Brady.....waving the bloody shirt for more gun grabbing.
And if Mark Kelly gets in the Senate, he’ll be the Dem’s go-to guy on gun control, a voice of supposed authority no one would dare question or oppose because he’s suffered so much from gun violence—just like they did with Sarah Brady.
Just what we need another perfumed prince.
So Gabby is planning to run for re-election? And people would actually vote for her, knowing she’s physically unable to fulfill the duties of her office? What is wrong with these people?
Not to be mean, but why do we even let these people who are incapacitated take up space in Congress (Gabby, Ted Kennedy, Byrd, Strom Thurmond, et al)? While one part of me is glad the Dems are missing a vote in the House, another part of me is irritated that they’re on the payroll, racking up pension benefits and taking up space while not fulfilling the duties of the office.
John Glenn saved Clinton and was rewarded with a seat on the Shuttle.
Don't forget that Senator from South Dakota Tim Johnson who had a major stroke and is still in the Senate, but never speaks, attends committee meetings, or even sponsors legislation. The Dems keep this guy propped up just to keep their numbers. I can't believe the people of South Dakota are okay with this. There's compassion, and then there's just being stupid with your compassion and letting yourself, and your vote, be used.
Gabby should have resigned her position when she was released to Huston rehab..she looks wonderful physically its the mental function that will not return to full activity.
This Congress is such direr condition they all need replaced.
‘This would be like electing Sarah Brady to the Senate.’
Or the widow Carnahan.
Oh dear...
In the case of Giffords and Arizona, the state of Arizona has a law where if a member of congress is incapacitated for more than three months, they will be removed and a new election held. Giffords has been in violation of this law for a while now, and unfortunately, anyone who brings it up would likely be condemned. It is time for her to do the dignified thing and resign to focus on her recovery and let someone else more able bodied serve. If she recovers to the point where she could serve again, she would doubtless be elected in a landslide. It is unfortunate that this happened, and I admire her strength, but she needs to be the one to resign, not to have this devolve into a partisan war with people calling for her to resign.
Bolshecrat seems to be assumed, is he?
she’s got what 12 months or so of intense rehab to get to be trotted out on stage at the Democrat convention ....I can see it now ... they have no shame
Dude: take care of your wife like a man.
Of course that’s not directed at you!
There's hundreds of thousands of Tucson citizens without representation in congress. She needs to step aside. Their representation is more important than the ego of one person or the political maneuvering of her party.
Well, a better way of putting it on my part would be our service people who were maimed in protecting our nation. That was the intent of my remark.
Wow, I never thought of that! I hope she does.
