Iran giving out condoms for criminals to rape us, say jailed activists

Smuggled letters allege authorities are using mass rape as a weapon inside Iran's most notorious prisons.

Prison guards in Iran are giving condoms to criminals and encouraging them to systematically rape young opposition activists locked up with them...authorities are intentionally facilitating mass rape and using it as a form of punishment.

Mehdi Mahmoudian, an outspoken member of Iran's Participation Front, a reformist political party, is among those prisoners who have succeeded in smuggling out letters revealing the extent of rape inside some of the most notorious prisons.

...

one young prisoner was raped seven times in a single night. "In [Rajaeeshahr] prison, those who have pretty faces and are unable to defend themselves or cannot afford to bribe others are forcibly taken to different cells each night [to be raped]," he writes.

"The situation is such that those exposed to rape even have an owner and that owner makes money by renting him out to others and after a while selling him to someone else."

I wonder if the prevention of AIDS is an issue here.

AIDS is an issue in Iran. But its prevention in a prison in Iran is not. Except, perhaps, to protect a prison guard, when he rapes a female or a male who might be HIV- positive.

Interesting that I haven't come across any recent articles about drug distribution in Iranian prisons. Or, drug addiction in Iran in general. Drugs are another cruel & malicious tactic used by the Mullahs' regime to subdue the people, especially prisoners. News had it that back in 1999 during major Student demonstrations in Tehran, the regime sent its minions to student dorms to hand out free drugs.

I was sent an email in Persian back in April 2009 about drug distribution in a Gorgan prison. Gorgan is the capital of Golestan province (northeast of Iran, along the Caspian Sea). I translated it into English back then for a blog. It said the following:

“Please inform others of this news in order to stop this ongoing tragedy. I am contacting you from Gorgan, where 7 or 8 years ago they set fire to Raibaz prison [Amir Abad Gorgan] and lied by claiming the fire was accidental; they burned the prisoners alive. One of the surviving prisoners said the fire was deliberately lit. Now another abomination is underway.”

“Gorgan prison is worse than Rajaee-Shahr prison (in Karaj, near Tehran). Believe it that the tragedy taking place in Gorgan prison is 100 times more dangerous & horrifying. In Rajaee-Shahr and other secret prisons, the Islamic Republic tortures people. In Gorgan prison they make the prisoners dependent on deadly drugs – one can find all types of addictive, illicit, and deadly drugs ranging from Pills to Crack, Heroin, and Methamphetamine known as (Shisheh = Glass).

According to prisoners, Prison-Guards, and, even worse, the Prison Governor has a hand in distributing these. The cost of purchasing chemically-based, illicit drugs is less in the prison than outside; they even allow credit sales. The misfortune they bring upon people’s children in Gorgan Prison is not customary in the worst jails around the world. Please disseminate this news so that the International Community is aware, and can take action to help and prevent the continued occurrence of this tragedy.”

An article published in 2005 sheds some light on the drug problem in Iran; matters certainly haven't improved since then -- Opiates of the Iranian People

The prisons here may not be a picnic, but at least the people inside have had a trial and been convicted of actually committing a crime that warrants being inprisoned.

In plain English ... they deserved it!

Now more than ever...

The good news is the Iranian Islamic regime stands behind its citizens.

The bad news is it’s rolling on a condom.

No. Not at all. But your comments would fit right in with the liberal take on this.

Oh, not at all; I can perceive the difference. They do it formally, while we do it informally. Please, if any liberals are reading this forum, let there be no misunderstandings.

riiight....U.S. prisons and justice system are just as bad as Iranian prisons. How silly of me not to know that.

I cannot understand this; I thought that the wonderful guardian.co.uk ... was all in favor of these sort of practices. You know ... support the ROP ... support homosexuality ... support ‘free love. Can’t see why their outrage.

It’s been well-known that Iranian guards have used rape as a punishment and humiliation tool.

even ordinary women prisoners, often innocent, are forceably “married” before they are executed.

Yes, I was thinking about trying to protect the prison guards from AIDS as the primary distribution of condoms to prisoners in Iran.

The primary & main motive for rape is power. Everything else results from asserting that power on the victim.

I guess the rape victims are supposed to be grateful that they use condoms?

Talk about poking the Tiger...how many of these victims are going to seek revenge against the state after they are sprung?

What makes you think that any not deep into Stockholm syndrome, are ever going to be sprung.

Very interesting comment about Stockholm syndrome, and it may well apply to some of these rape victims in prison.

As a psychologist, I can tell you that Stockholm syndrome, almost always develops when the perp or captor combines other forms of psychological pressure/abuse with occasional physical abuse. Or, threatens the victim with physical abuse, as punishment for non-compliance, in order to establish direct emotional & psychological dependence on the perp by the victim for his/her well-being.

Other forms of psychological pressure can range from kindness to isolation of prisoners & so forth. But, what matters is combining positive (reward e.g. kindess) with negative (punishment e.g. threats or actual abuse). The positive (reward) must be present, and must be genuinely felt by the victim.

Those who are continuously & only raped or tortured, are highly UNlikely to develop Stockholm syndrome. They'll develop hatred & when get the chance will seek revenge. Certainly, the families & relatives of these victims won't be suffering from Stockholm syndrome.
