'Offensive' images found in S.F. school murals

San Francisco -- The head of a children's art organization, arrested three weeks ago for possession of child pornography, placed "offensive" tiles in murals he created at four city schools, San Francisco police said Friday.

Some 100 "inappropriate" tiles have been found in murals at Sunset Elementary School and three other unnamed schools in the city, said Police Chief Greg Suhr.

Anthony Josef Norris, founder and director of Kid Serve Youth Murals,designed and worked on all the projects. The San Francisco man surrendered June 2 to the FBI after agents investigating a website known for child pornography traced the log-on name of "Spanky" to his home computer and discovered 600 pornographic images of children, according to an arrest warrant affidavit filed in federal court in San Francisco.

While in no way speaking in favor of his acts (if true), when you talk about tiles as small as 1"x1" - HOW CAN YOU TELL without a roadmap?

Then the reporter uses (with a straight face!?) the following line; "So far, no evidence suggests that children were harmed in the making of the murals." Frankly, I'm not sure that this is not satire!

Approximately 100 “inappropriate” tiles were found, Suhr said.

Police did not provide images of the tiles to the media, or discuss what specifically was deemed offensive.

“I think as an adult, you would look at these tiles and see, possibly, some sort of sexual connotation to them,” said police Cmdr. Mike Biel, who heads the department’s investigations division.

Biel said many of the tiles were embedded with images “like a negative of a photograph that is inlaid behind the clear tile itself.”

“They depict many things,” he said. “Some may be construed as offensive, some may not. And some of the tiles are actually drawings, so not all of them are actually photographs.”

Would seem to me he got some jollies by putting the images there, knowing the kids were looking at them, even if they didn’t know exactly what they were seeing.

I followed your sfexaminer link to look at the pics, thinking perhaps there were some images embedded, like the lines of a nude woman in that old vodka ad, and you know what? There was a vodka ad accompanying the article!

The pedophiles will always be found near children. Any organization that works with schools and with kids like this should be examined closely and kept an eye on by parents and the community. The sad fact is in so many cases, especially the schools, no one is really paying attention.
Yet one more reason why centralized education system is bad. This guy had access to many schools and hundreds of children. Who knows what else he was surreptitiously doing?

I also wonder if some folks might have gotten a “gut feeling” when they met this guy but brushed it off.

There have been 2 times in my life I have met someone that set off the “this is evil” alarm. In one instance I was proven correct when the man was arrested for molesting girls. The other instance I will never know for sure.
