OTTAWA Back-to-work legislation parliamentarians have been debating for more than 48 hours passed in the House of Commons Saturday evening.
Labour Minister Lisa Raitt, who introduced the bill Monday said postal workers will be back on the job 24 hours after the bill becomes law. The bill still has to pass in the Senate a process the federal government has said can be accomplished within one day and senators will be in the red chamber Sunday to debate the proposed legislation.
Bill-C6 passed third reading shortly after 8:00 following debate and filibusters that kept the Commons alive since Thursday by a count of 158-113, with Liberals and New Democrats vehemently opposing its implementation.
This is not in the interest of the employees, not in the interest of the employers and not in the interest of Canadians, said Liberal MP Stephane Dion.
But Labour Minister Lisa Raitt said the bill meets the requirement of the charter.
Earlier Saturday, the NDP proposed an amendment to address their main point of contention: that the Conservatives proposal contains lower wages than what originally was proposed by Canada Post during its negotiations with the union.
Liberal MP Rodger Cuzner called it the among the most concerning aspects of the bill.
As debate on back-to-work legislation lurched towards the finish line Saturday afternoon, unionized Canada Post employees thanked the NDP for delaying government efforts to order the 50,000 locked-out workers back on the job.
In a letter to NDP leader Jack Layton, the president of the union said the stalling tactics bought them time, but it hasnt been enough to end the impasse.

Public parasites delivering subsidized junk mail.
The Liberals passed similar legislation several times, while they were in power. At least the NDP are consistently in the tank for the union.
I’ve made a bit more money because of the strike,
but it does little to reduce the irritation I feel for being on the hook for their “sick days”.
So, has any one up there used the words “Canada Post” and “privatization” in the same sentence yet? Maybe they should.
It’s not in the best interest of Canadians to get their mail delivered again?

Thanks for keeping us out of a job! That's what leftists are all about I guess.
Good this has really screwed up my hockey card sales on eBay.
But the long and short of it is: if it wasn't for the greed of the union for the public’s money, this strike wouldn't have happened. It is a never ending cycle of parasites that has to be stopped. It is not their money, it is the people's money, and if they want higher wages, they can get jobs in the private sector..which can't afford to pay them because they want too much in the way of benefits.
The only thing that comes in the mail is bad news and junk mail.
If it is really important Use FED EX.
Abolish the postal service in Canada and the USA.
Liberals are union lackeys, regardless of country.
This is the most exciting news out of Canada since Anne Murray retired.
Dear Canada, there is a rather simple solution to this sorry state of affairs, a solution that would make Canada a true leader in the 21st Century: fire the whole lot of them, shut down this useless relic of the 1800s, and let FedEx, UPS, DHL, and every other private delivery company, right down to the local bicycle messengers, deliver Canada’s mails system into the 21st Century.
