I read this article with a mix of amusement, disgust and sadness at what our society is permitting itself to become. The shocking thing about it is that it is no longer shocking at all. It seems that we are losing our capacity for horror: as though it were perfectly natural for a little girl to be raised by women without husbands, or men without wives, but by chance strangers whose attraction is not romantic love but unnatural compulsion.

And we see it all going by, the Freak Parade whose marchers grow progressively more misshapen and bizarre with each passing year, and just shake our heads and doubt there's anything we can do about it.

Imagine it is 1967 and you pick up a magazine and open it and read the very same story (as appears in NRO). What would have been your reaction? Disbelief? Disgust? Horror? Would you flip the magazine over to see if you had accidentally happened upon some seedy, underground counter-culture rag? Would you have felt a sudden impulse to wash your hands?

Whatever your visceral reaction, you likely would have felt as though you were reading about somewhere other than America, or perhaps about some hellish, future dystopic version of it. They always said Satan would lower our standards bit by bit, so gradually that we would not see it coming. Welcome to Hell.

It's tempting to think that there is still a real America someplace else, someplace where this could not happen. (The Midwest? The South?) But thanks to modern communication conrolled by a relatively small elite, we have an increasingly homogeneous (no pun intended) culture now in which every schoolchild knows that (s)he must respond to scenes like this with the mantra, "Who are we to judge?"
