It’s called “multi-tasking” and very intelligent people usually do it. It does not surprise me that Palin is a multi-tasker.

Example: During my (not very long ago) days at IBM, I was in Worldwide Marketing for High Performance Computing. For about 2-3 years of that multi-year role, I had the pleasure of working for a young lady I'll simply refer to as Wendy.
Wendy is actually the daughter of Jimmy Page (yes, THE Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin fame). She's tiny, loooooong platinum blonde hair, big blue eyes, and a southern belle accent that would melt the hardest of hard-cases. Always dripping in diamonds.
We traveled together a fair amount on business and were in countless meetings together. She'd flit into the room....and you could immediately read the faces around the room; those who didn't know her ("..oh brother; guess we see how SHE got promoted..."). They would proceed to treat her like a total bimbo the entire meeting.
The whole meeting........Wendy would sit at her little laptop and type-type-type away as others spoke. Nonstop. Rarely looking up; maybe a little nod and an "um-hmm" of an acknowledgement.
Of course, I loved it; hard to contain my laughter. See, Wendy has six college degrees....count 'em, six.....one of which is a BS in Electrical Engineering; one of which is an MBA. Freakin' brilliant.
Near the end of every meeting, this little distracted, platinum blonde cutie "bimbo"....would take over. She was capturing and analyzing EVERYTHING on the fly on that laptop. She would very politely but firmly ask questions, get clarifications, state her/our position....I mean she'd take 'em apart in the NICEST way.
Again, I saw this so many times it was always SO hard for me to keep a straight face. :)
Point is.....don't judge that pretty female book by its cover, and sure as hell don't think you can pretend to know what they are or aren't hearing, digesting, understanding, digesting, planning as they type....on a laptop or a Blackberry.

You are right. The world is full of too many mindreaders and as your example shows, a person can be very engaged contrary to superficial appearances. But I'll agree with the frustrating part of the title. It is frustrating to have a meeting while the head person is giving the appearance of not caring. Some would say it is rudeness.
Oh I’m sure the media will be a lot less happy when Palin takes the gloves off and ‘engages’ them ;)
