“because HOAs are voluntary.“

Not really. Collectively they individually have gain a monopoly on all housing within any reasonable distance of every city and town.

Nonsense. There are options in every community, including HOAs with rules you like.

There is a reason why they are adopted, and that is because they make the properties worth more to typical buyers.

If you ain’t typical, maybe some rural property with appliances in the yard are warranted.

“that is because they make the properties worth more to typical buyers.”

That is how they SELL it to make money, but that isn’t the truth. HOAs do not control the majority of things that cause home devalutations.

“maybe some rural property with appliances in the yard are warranted.

That’s about as liberal as saying the central US is “fly over country”. To claim rural means inbred hillbilly is nothing but liberal propaganda.

You obviously have not been into anything rural.

Cities are the worst of the nasty neighborhoods and they even have real govenrments and not some busybody yuppies playing make-believe government.

” It still may be tyrannical”

Many Germans supported the Nazi killing the Jews, but that didn’t make tyranny right. Neither are HOAs. They are adhesion contracts, nothing more. Perpetual contracts seem to be illegal, yet, HOAs persist.

If you do not like the rules of the HOA do not buy in that neighborhood. Your choice, but if you want to live in a nicer neighborhood you are probably going to have a HOA. It is the best way to make sure all the properties are kept up. I like having one, it helps keep scummy neighbors out.

That pretty much sums up my HOA.

It pretty much sums up all HOAs. If people do not like them they can buy someplace else, but if they want all properties and common grounds kept up in their neighborhoods they need one.
