Seattle police 'embarrassed' by rifle left unattended on cruiser
Seattle Times ^ | 6/28/11 | Christine Clarridge

Seattle police are looking into the "very embarrassing" circumstances that led to a semi-automatic assault rifle being left on the trunk lid of an unattended patrol vehicle in public.

Everybody's done it.

You place an item on top of a car only to remember later — after you or someone else has driven off.

But when the forgetful individual is a Seattle police officer and the item is a semi-automatic rifle, it's more than a little embarrassing. It's also the focus of an internal investigation.

Seattle police spokesman Sgt. Sean Whitcomb conceded Tuesday it was "very embarrassing" that a semi-automatic rifle was left on the trunk lid of a police cruiser in downtown Seattle on Monday.

Only a semi-auto? Well that might explain why no one snagged it and drove off.

Yeah, I remember leaving my infant child on the hood of my car and drove off...oh silly me, then I remember leaving my paycheck for the month, over 8k, in small bills, in the front seat of my convertible while I went to a movie( hey, it happens to everyone). Moral of this article is democrats can get away with murder( Blockovitch should have been tried in Seattle)

If you think that’s cute, check out some of the stuff in the daily beast article on Melson's deal to testify:

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2011/06/27/atf-head-kenneth-melson-to-testify-before-congress-on-operation-fast-and-furious.html

“The briefers explained that the goal of the investigation was to track the guns to the larger cartels so a bigger case could be made, and that three of the most popular weapons that had been trafficked included an AK-57 variant known as the 7.62, .50-caliber weapons, and an AR semiautomatic variant known as the 5.56.”

AK-57 variant?

AK-57 variant?

It's the "obama 57 states" commemorative model.

That’s the rare variant made by Birdman Weapon Systems. Looks like they got shut down some time ago.

The terminology is quite interesting, as this somehow bucks the standard rap that an ar15 rifle in the hands of the police is a patrol rifle, while the same rifle in our possession is an assault rifle.

Perhaps the fact that it was outside the police car and not in the hands of an officer is responsible for for the article labeling it with the devil's moniker. It would be interesting to see at what point the rifle transformed from "patrol" to "assault".

If it were halfway out the window of the cruiser would perhaps be the most straightforward way to tell. My guess is that if the barrel is pointing OUT, it is a patrol rifle, and if it is pointing IN, an assault rifle.

Just want make sure we understand the rules...

Oh my! How many people were killed when it jumped up by itself and started shooting innocent bystanders?
