I've come to the conclusion that it isn't necessarily an issue of liberal vs conservative. Be it Jewish, American, European, etc.. - It is an issue of having a functioning brain, awareness, and, more importantly, choosing to understand & acknowledge the danger. And, not feed it or appease those who instigate it.
For example, there are liberals who choose to side with Islamists because they perceive them as an ally against "western imperialism". There are also conservatives who choose to be supportive, because they often view Islam as a religion & faith, in the context of Christianity, and therefore promote tolerance & peace.
Tolerance & a peaceful co-existence is all well & good. But, Islam has a very different historical, social & cultural foundation, even as it did borrow much of its theology (incl. socalled spiritual aspects) from preceding Abrahamic faiths, and others such as Zoroastrianism.
It is complicated, but I think the west should quit promoting different shades of Islam & attaching various & ever changing labels to them, such as radical, fundamentalist, political, moderate, etc... - that's something for various prominent moslem theologians & clerics to come together, thrash out, define, agree on, & communicate with appropriate authority to moslems worldwide. It won't wash with many moslem if the President of US or the Pope keeps talking about Islam is a religion of peace...
No doubt religious zealots will always exist. But, in Islam's case, they justify their actions based on those of the Prophet of Islam, Mohammad & his immediate disciples. Especially, after Mohammad moved (hijra) from Mecca to Medina. So, in the eyes of many religious moslems, at least, these religious zealots or call them Jihadists have a valid point.
Islam, like Liberalism, is a cult.
