Report: Denny's, Wendy's and Domino's among restaurants in danger of bankruptcy (Obama Depression)
WCPO ^ | 06/30/2011 | Pete Kenworthy

Following bankruptcy filings by Sbarro, Perkins and Marie Callender’s this year, new data suggests that other popular restaurant chains are in danger of following suit.

TheStreet.com recently looked at restaurants based on their Altman Z-Score. The website says the score is based on “several aspects of a company's financial health -- including working capital, total assets, total liabilities, market capitalization, sales, retained earnings and earnings before interest & taxes (EBIT) -- to forecast the probability of it going bankrupt within two years.”

Since it began the scoring system in 1968, TheStreet says the formula has been 72 percent accurate in predicting corporate bankruptcies two years prior to the filing.

The list of restaurant in order of most at risk to file for bankruptcy (limited to those with a market capitalization of $100 million):

1. Denny’s 2. Wendy’s/Arby’s 3. Morton’s Restaurant Group 4. DineEquity (IHOP, Applebee’s) 5. Domino’s Pizza 6. Bravo Brio Restaurant Group 7. McCormick & Schmick’s 8. Ruth’s Hospitality Group (Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Mitchell’s Fish Market) 9. O’Charley’s 10. Einstein Noah Restaurant Group

To my knowledge, Arby’s is the only fast food place with horseradish sauce. That alone makes it good enough for me.

Apologies to Bakersfield Big Boy - the one I was referring to was at BARSTOW, CA located south of Barstow near the Factory Outlet center.

I prefer “real” NY style pizza. I guess it’s whatever you’re used to. :)

"horseradish and ketchup"

You might try adding a little garlic salt (or powder), and some fresh lemon juice to your ketchup and horseradish, to make the perfect sauce for your shrimp. YUM!

I’m open to reccommendations, but I’ll miss their Triple Decker Turkey Club w/fries. The July luncheon is next Wednesday (July 6th), so what do you suggest?

Hah! I have a better story for you. My brother’s father remarried a woman with tons of money. They lived in Palm Desert in a large house on a golf course. They also owned a 3 bedroom condo on another golf course so that when people visited they could stay there. We used to go down all the time. They would leave us alone and we would do our own thing.
Last trip down they invited us to dinner at Ruth Chris. There were 8 of us total. We all had what we wanted plus a couple of bottles of wine and drinks.
The waitress brought the bill and it laid on the table forever, they totally ignored it. Finally Hubby picked it up and handed it with our AMEX to the waitress. The total, tip and all, was $900.
They got up looked at us and said....its been great seeing you, come back anytime. rofl
We went back to the condo, opened every door and window, and turned the ac on stun. It was 113 outside.
It was our last trip. hahaha

Yeah, but if they ship them from China to sell in America, isn’t that the same problem?

Are they now saying they sell more there than here so let’s just reverse the old plans? Now that to me seems un-American.

Oh, but wait...even though the Commies run China, they obviously aren’t as tyrannical to business as our own federal government is. Maybe they are truly just looking at the cost of labor.

I’m sure these Chinese plants have many Americans working in them and I’d bet mostly in upper levels like management or engineering, IT department, etc.

I’ve worked on assembly lines when I was in college a couple of summers and the average worker is probably dumber than a Chinese worker when it comes to repetitive work. And I’ll bet in China they don’t goof off, drink on the job, take drugs, sabotage the line to get overtime, etc. Saw it all at Whirlpool. Which is why early on I learned to hate unions.

I was working in New Orleans the end of last year and the Ruth’s Chris near my hotel had started doing lunch again.

That's because Sean Hannity advertised for them on his pathetic radio show.

He is the worst. He loves RINOs

gives them all the air time they could ever want. His listeners probably can't wait to vote for Romney.

Taking your lunch to work and eating dinner at home are simple things you can do to save a lot of money.

Given how long the economy has been down, it’s not surprising restaruants are hurting.

I was thinking exactly the same thing; my wife and I had developed the bad habit of ordering a lot of dinners for delivery until, that is, the economy started going under and we lost about half of our income. Now we mostly cook at home (except for Fridays, when we all need a little treat). If enough other people are doing that as well, then it would stand to reason that a lot of restaurants are hurting.

I haven't quit mourning since Royal Castle went under years ago. I think it was their gigantic breakfast murals featuring eggs and coffee beans that turned me into a caffeine addict.

There is only one Arby's in the entire region where I live, and I probably eat there maybe once every two or three years.

Until it is closed or service declines, I say no change.

I’ll put out the notice tomorrow.

Bill Knapps is long gone. I used to love that place. On your birthday you got a chocolate cake and whatever your age, they deducted that % off your bill. They used to have a picture wall with all of the 100 year olds that got a "free" dinner.

Back to the subject, I used to work at Taco Bell and Dominos. They used to be well run, with quality, if not spectacular ingredients. When they decided to go cheap, with substandard pre-made crap it was just a matter of time before they were going to start feeling the pinch in a down economy. Domino's has apparently started making a better pizza, but it looks like it may be too late. In my lifetime, I don't recall fast food franchises going out of business. They were usually pretty reliable money makers. Even in crummy neighborhoods. I remember when I lived in Baltimore, that the KFC counter was behind bulletproof glass. You got your food through this rotating clear drum. How can you tell if you're in a bad neighborhood? If there's a Church's chicken joint operating there. And I LIKE their chicken. I've just never seen one in an upscale area.
