On the heels of a law signed last year by President Barack Obama limiting sentences for crack cocaine offenses, thousands of prisoners for crimes related to the drug will be eligible for early release, the U.S. Sentencing Commission ruled Thursday.

Crimes related to drugs, it seems to me it would depend on the crime, is the crime just using drugs or are they crimes other than drugs?

Well, i don,t know but would like to remind every one, if you get caught not wearing a seat belt, and you happen to have a gun in your car you may be in bigger trouble than the people who use drugs.

I will be honest, i don,t know anything about drugs although i have heard about them since i was in the service in 1955 however i think we really need to use caution about what we tell some one what they can or can,t do.

I quit drinking alcohol many years ago, but if the law enforcement had of been like they are now i might not have quit, i might have kept on drinking just to show them i would do what i wanted.

Also i have heard a law enforcement officer say that the so called war on drugs was more of a danger than the drugs themselves.

Bingo. The crack scare of the 1980’s and 90’s was based on a lot of bad science and panicked reactions by lawmakers (sound like any OTHER issue you could name?)

and if nothing else, in a time of trying to cut federal spending this will help:

It costs 22,632 per year to house a federal prisoner, so by my calculations this will save us $271,584,000 PER YEAR and if this shaves a decade or more off their sentences, that’s a significant chunk of change
