Crews have started removing almost 1,000 panels of glass from balconies at the 37-story W Austin Hotel and Residences, a job that will likely extend into next week.

Replacement work cannot begin, though, until developer Stratus Properties learns what caused panels to shatter and fall three times in just over two weeks.

The downtown hotel temporarily closed its doors Tuesday night after a trio of panels rained down on the building's south side. On Monday, three other panels dropped onto nearby streets. No one was hurt in either of this week's incidents, but four people suffered injuries when two panels crashed into the W's pool area June 10.

By late Wednesday afternoon, a team of 12 two-man crews had cleared glass from balconies on several of the high-rise's upper floors.

A condo owner at the W allowed the American-Statesman to inspect a balcony Wednesday. Etching on a glass panel bore the symbol and name of XYG, or Xinyi Glass, a Chinese glass manufacturer founded in 1988.

Steve Winn claims his hotels have class. In Austin, people would just appreciate reliable glass. Surely he could have bought from somewhere other than the schlock-masters in Communist China.

Interesting how this article left out the death of one girl and another serious condition. And the link says the incidents are totally unrelated.

W Hotel officials in Atlanta have said that the incidents were "quite different" and "totally unrelated."

I wonder if expansion or contraction of the building is the problem or something in the Sill is corroding to put pressure on the edge of the glass. Or whatever little pads the glass is sitting on broke down to their is nothing left to the point of glass on metal and a little vibration on the edge and pow the glass breaks.

I knew it before I read it. Saw the headline and thought to myself. Bet the glass was made in china. Sure enough, it was.

We arrived home one afternoon to discover that our entire sliding glass door was missing. It had broken in an odd way. There were no large pieces and all the small pieces were about the same size, roughly half inch square.

Since this was an entrance door we needed it replaced immediately. We called Dothan Glass and they came out within an hour and replaced it inexpensively and quickly.

One of the workers told us that tempered glass actually did that every now and then and it always breaks the same way.

Chinese glass plus Texas heat? What did they expect.

They had some glass problems in Dallas this week, as well.

VERY GOOD article on the subject. Appears you can tell if it has “Glass Cancer” simple using a microscope.
