* Russia set to start producing Bulava nuclear missile
MOSCOW, July 1 (Reuters) - Moscow will create two brigades to protect its valuable Arctic resources, Russia's defence minister said on Friday.
Moscow has walked a fine line between cooperation and aggression in the Arctic which the world's top energy producer believes could hold huge reserves of natural gas and oil.
"The General Staff is currently working on plans to create two such units," Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov was quoted as telling media by state-run news agency Itar-Tass.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that Russia would boost its presence in the region to protect its interests.
"As for our own geo-political interests (in the Arctic) are concerned, we shall be protecting them firmly and consistently," Putin told a meeting of his ruling United Russia party on Thursday in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg.

Serdyukov also said that Russia was in a position to start production of its intercontinental Bulava missile following the most recent successful test of the armament this week.
His ministry has said the missile, which the Kremlin wants to make the cornerstone of its nuclear arms programme, will undergo four more tests this year before being introduced into service.

Good strategy on the part of the Russians? Somebody should tell them to net search “shale gas”; maybe they’d save the cost of a few brigades worth of troops.

Not long ago a Russian sub put a Russian flag on the sea floor below the north pole claiming it as their territory. This makes sense given the oil that is probably there.

Too bad we don’t have a Putin here. Yeah, Putin is tough, say what you will, but he loves his country and he has a lot of country to defend. He knows the USA has no intention of invading Russia, we aren’t his problem, his problems are on his vast borders. His priority is getting Russia to be a major power again. There is definitely a storm brewing on our planet, and a major conflict (WW III) can happen anywhere. He knows this, and knows Russia has a wealth of natural resources. He also knows if anything ever happens Russia will probably become involved one way or another. Those missiles are his finger shaking at the world powers implying, lay of mother Russia.
The two Brigades of troops are to reclaim the vast untapped oil reserves, of Alaska. Pretty obvious, there is nobody to defend from. It is also why they need to finish development of the nuclear missile.
Eh, they’ll be invading at just a time when advances in shale fracturing render it significantly less valuable. Applications of ‘fracking’ may even open up shale oil reserves and if that happens the US (and Israel among others) will become significant oil players again.

Eh, I suspect that Russia and China will not stop with Alaska, the advances in shale fracturing render the mainland significantly more valuable than before.
