We're talking a lot of desert here. This is the same ground that Rommel and the British generals fought over in 1941 to 1943, with many of the same logistics problems. 100,000 mi² is not the same as 100,000 mi² of farmland.

Actually, it isn’t the same ground that Rommel and the British generals fought over. That conflict was limited to a relatively narrow band from the coast to perhaps a hundred or so miles inland. Nothing much was going on militarily, then, where these current events are taking place.
