Perry, Palin aren't running, just enjoying the ride
Beaumont Enterprise ^ | July 3, 2011 | Thomas Taschinger (I bet is a democrat)

Rick Perry and Sarah Palin aren't stupid, no matter what you might think of them. They are riding a comet, and they are in no hurry to get off.

I'm talking about the possibility of running for president.

Neither one will probably take the plunge. Given the realities of modern campaigning and fund-raising, they'd already be in this thing if they were serious about it. Both are content in their real jobs - Perry as governor of a huge state, Palin as a money-making-machine and voice of the hard Right.

But why stop the fun?

As long as they are referred to as "possible" candidates, they have an influence that just can't be beat.

Every speech and political move they make is followed with enthusiasm by the 24-hour news cycle. Witness Palin's earlier bus tour of the East Coast. If she were officially a non-candidate, she'd attract little or no coverage for a stunt like that. But her bus was eagerly followed by packs of reporters who hung around her just in case something happened, like an announcement that she was running.

Turns out nothing happened, except she muffed the reason for Paul Revere's ride. ("Hey, you British! The British are coming!")

It's possible that a wavering candidate can attempt a what-the-heck late fling that defies all the conventional wisdom about how to run for president, but that's risky. It probably won't succeed, and you will probably look like an idiot when your candidacy inevitably craters.

That undoes everything that the earlier tease built up - that you are a serious person who deserves to be considered for the most important job on earth. In the case of Palin, who is wavering on the edge of respectability, that's a mistake you don't want to make.

No, this is something you want to stretch out as long as possible. You give major speeches on important issues. You go to meetings and conventions you'd otherwise blow off. If national interest is waning, you hint that you might be jumping in after all.

And it's always possible, of course, that lightning will strike and party elders will beg you to ride to the rescue if no strong contender emerges. In Perry's case, this raises his stock for a VP selection, though he probably doesn't want that either.

Eventually, the game will end. A front-runner will emerge, or the primary season will be so close that the Hamlet act runs out of steam.

But for a few weeks, or a few months, you are one of only a handful of people who might someday be ... the president of the United States. That's a heady feeling, and in fact you'd almost be a fool not to flirt with the idea.

Besides, if nothing else, you can always tell the grandkids about it some day.

I didn’t get that far - so this is a ‘anyone but Sarah’ article. Fear reigns. The commie rats and rino’s have a lot at stack - their power to control what ‘we the people’ should be controlling.

Exactly. The media do not report news - what already happened - they prophesy what they want to happen.

I have faith in @SarahPalinUSA’s decision-making process & the due diligence she affords it. She will win the presidency, on *her* terms.

Just what is a hard right? With Harvard calling the 4th of July a right wing celebration, I suspect the “Right” is anyone not a dyed in the wool Marxist at this point.

The GOP is going to be serving up a big batch of Perry/Palin Kool-aid in 2012, guaranteed. The conservative masses will hail them as the Second-coming here to deliver America from Satan's helper, Barry Soetoro.

This is how that's going to play out for conservatives like it always does.

Exactly. Public schools, by and large, have made sure that is the perception of normal, working Americans -- the Tea Party Americans.

Especially since he is setting up for Iowa as we speak.

The deadline for securing a speaking spot on the Ames Iowa Straw poll day passed on June 23 without an application from Perry. That said his people are still working on thing in Iowa as you said. Perry is scheduled to speak in SC on the same day as the Ames Iowa Straw poll. Some of his people are saying it maybe possible for him to be in both places at the same day. It appears they want to play some part in Ames.

Another article I read a few days ago said in essence that the Perry group is pulling together the info on how strong his fund raising support will/could be nationwide. Perry has indicated he doesn’t want to spend his time crisscrossing the country for fundraising but rather spend his time on political campaign events with the public. In other words he wants the money to be there without having to spend a lot of time doing the ground work. Or that’s how I read the article.

So, what's your point? That Palin owns the Presidency and that all she needs to do is declare to claim it? If that is what you think, you had better line up a good grief-loss counselor in advance.

“....The Republican Party of Iowa allocated space to GOP hopefuls in an auction last month. But outside groups can still reserve space—though it’s unclear if Perry, should he attend, would be able to qualify for the poll or a speaking slot.

The Texas governor is scheduled to speak at a conference sponsored by the conservative blog RedState in South Carolina that day but a Perry spokesman told the Dallas Morning News his boss could still possibly attend both events....”

I have seen similar articles, which is why I posted the claim. I think that Ames Straw Poll is not the king maker that sets up the Iowa primary, it will be a combination of other venues as well as the result of Perry making an official declaration.

Parry will still make it known that he is a candidate even if he is not listed in the poll. The damage will be only small if at all.

“We are far more likely to see espionage and attacks from Japanese agents already here in Hawaii, than we are to see an all out assault on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese Military.”

It is called “Wishful Thinking”.

I think if Palin and Perry entered the race on the same day, things would get delightfully lively. :)

how do you know what the question was? To even say if the answer was correct or not. To this day I have not heard the question that was asked of Palin when she gave her answer. Since she had just come from the Paul Revere house and just done a tour.

the question could have been what did you learn today?

Her answer was historically correct. historians have backed her up. So provide the question she was asked. Or stuff it.

Oh contrare......,

Palin has almost directly said that she plans on touring the country in support of candidates out to defeat Obama.

(“Being a private citizen, I think I am a good example for others to show that you don’t have to have a title, you don’t have to hold national or statewide office in order to effect positive change and make a difference,” she said.)

Given her negative ratings, that could also hurt us. Sort of like having GW Bush stumping for us.

Palin may play well with the Populist wing of the base, but she is still a lightening rod among the general public.

And would deeply split the conservative vote once again. In essence, another 2008 all over again.

Romney would then walk all over the general primaries like McCain did.
