Defending Michele Bachmann (in a manner of speaking). Just how important are the gaffes?
Washington Times ^ | 07/03/2011 | Bob Seigel

Starting advantage for Michele Bachmann’s campaign: She reminds the powerful Tea Party movement of Sarah Palin!

Starting disadvantage for Michele Bachmann’s campaign: She also reminds the rest of the country of Sarah Palin!

Unfortunately for our forthcoming election, important similarities between Bachmann and Palin, such as their conservative stance on issues, will play second fiddle to a reputation of gaffe making. In the tradition of Palin’s Paul Revere commentary, Michele Bachman is offering controversial history comments of her own, with a sprinkle of geography mixed in.

As reported by Carl Cameron,“Speaking on Fox News Sunday evening in front of her modest childhood home, Bachmann said she's a natural fit for the state's first-in-the-nation caucus voters.” I want them to know just like John Wayne is from Waterloo Iowa, that's the spirit I have too," Bachmann said. ‘It's embracing America. It's sacrificing for America.’

Fans of the Duke immediately spotted the error, however, and called to point out that John Wayne was born 150 miles away in Winterset, Iowa. Serial killer John Wayne Gacy lived and worked in Waterloo.

The Bachmann campaign quickly responded by noting the parents of John Wayne the iconic American actor, did live in Waterloo for a time “(Carl Cameron, Fox Nation, June 27, 2011).

A day later, Bachmann admitted that she misspoke (Daily News, June 28, 2011). It would have been easier had she faced up to the gaffe immediately, just as it would have been easier for her die-hard apologists to concede that John Quincy Adams was not the best example of our abolitionist Founding Fathers to share with ABC News host, George Stephanopoulos. Granted, the exact cut-off year for a “Founding Father” may be a matter of debate in some circles,

I have difficulty understanding why conservative candidates keep agreeing to appear in interviews with Leftist creeps like Couric and Staphyloccus. Don't they know by now that those guys will seek by every means to trip them up?

And what the heck do these so-called "gaffes" have with the ability to be President? What matters is having ethical principles, honor, decency, and understanding of the Constitution, not the ability to rattle off trivia.

So what else did she say? This is what ticks me off. It's as if someone introduced her, she walked up on stage, stood before the microphone and said, "John Wayne is from Waterloo!", and then walked off stage.

Is that how it happened? She didn't say anything else?

Jerks.

Everybody makes mistakes and mis-statements.

The problem is that the MSM and liberals magnify and hyperventilate about any such events with Republicans/conservatives, and ignore or find humor in gaffes of Democrats/liberals.

Imagine if a Republican had said he had been to 57 states, when we all know there are 50 states.

Imagine if a Republican had said “corpse-man”, mispronouncing a common military term.

Imagine if a Republican has said “Stand up Chuck” to a wheelchair bound man.

Imagine if a Republican had his lack of ability in some sport was like the Special Olympics.

Imagine if a Republican had said that President Roosevelt went on TV at the time of the stock market crash of ‘29, when Roosevelt wasn’t yet president, and TV as we know it didn’t exist yet.

Imagine if a Republican asked “what’s the website number” about an internet site.

We could go on, but the point is, Republican gaffes are treated as if that Republican is stupid, idiotic, lacks knowledge, is insensitive to disabled people, etc. while Democrat gaffes are either ignored or treated as gentle humor or comic relief.

The gaffes are important only if they keep happening.

Give me a break. Bachmann never said the name, John Wayne Gacy, it was created by the MSM to create a gaffe. Like Palin the libtards are deathly afraid of both Bachmann and Palin. The first woman President maybe???

“Fans of the Duke immediately spotted the error, however, and called to point out that John Wayne was born 150 miles away in Winterset, Iowa.”

That’s a “gaffe”? LOL.

“57 states”

“Corpse-Man”

“at a certain point you’ve made enough money”

“The Middle East is obviously an issue that has plagued the region for centuries”

“UPS and FedEx are doing just fine, right? It’s the Post Office that’s always having problems.” –attempting to make the case for government-run healthcare

“The Cambridge police acted stupidly” but admits to not knowing what happened

Austrian language

“bowled a 129. It’s like — it was like Special Olympics”

“spread the wealth around”

“my Muslim faith”

“Let me be absolutely clear. Israel is a strong friend of Israel’s. It will be a strong friend of Israel’s under a McCain...administration. It will be a strong friend of Israel’s under an Obama administration. So that policy is not going to change.”

“The reforms we seek would bring greater competition, choice, savings and inefficiencies to our health care system.”

“our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes — and I see many of them in the audience here today”

“they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion”

“Grandmother [..] is a typical white person”

“In case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten thousand people died — an entire town destroyed.” —on a Kansas tornado that killed 12 people

Perhaps unimportant, but Palin’s statement regarding Paul Revere was reported as inaccurate while a simple Google search revealed she was accurate.

What irony that an article discussing gaffes has itself a gaffe in it's fourth sentence.

Same old MSM crap - Gerald Ford was a clutz, Reagan a senile old fool, Quayle a goofy young boy, Bush a cowboy, Palin a redneck....

Nothing new here

Exactly right! They made Bush out to be a buffoon. However, last time I looked, there are no other buffoons with a Harvard MBA and trained to pilot a military jet.

Bush and Laura had more humanity and integrity in fifteen minutes of one day of their lives than this classless duo in the WH could rake together in a long lifetime. We conservatives are sick of the pompous lecturing and pointing of fingers at us to live frugally, while they fly around the world in huge jets transporting dozens of Secret Svc., their limos, and flying in lobsters to eat everywhere they go, including Montana where they slapped the local beef economy in the face by flying in lobster for several hundred.

Obama truly comes across as classless, as well as petulant, unorganized, scared of leading, clueless to anything except his radical agenda.

God help us if more of their constituents do not get a brain cell somewhere, preferably two cells, so they can spark a thought.

“In the tradition of Palin’s Paul Revere commentary,...”

At least the article writer got it partly correct and didn't refer specifically to “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere”, A POEM!!!!

Like here: From another article (one of a thousand), “Sarah Palin tells the famous story of the midnight ride of Paul Revere.”

Palin was CORRECT in everything she said. She didn't get lucky. I heard the same information from the National Park Rangers at the same location as Sarah did, only many years ago. I stood on the road, on the very spot, where Paul Revere was detained. I learned that he never completed his ride that he became famous for. IN A POEM. Which was where my previous knowledge came from as I had memorized the poem as a child. I didn't know about the two other guys, one of which, actually completed Paul's mission for him.

Everyone thinks the poem is “history”. it isn't. It is only partly true. “poetic license” if you will.

And while you're at it --"give the kid an uh uh-- breathalyzer".

Gaffes are going to be unavoidable in the era of 24-7 coverage as long as our candidates are normal humans and not slick psychopathic camera hounds. The only way to fight it is to hammer on those who are reporting things irresponsibly - to call them out relentlessly on their bias and unfair treatment of conservatives (especially our women).

People are slowly starting to wake up and be aware of the manipulation they've been subject to for so long....this will backfire badly-even on the mushy soccer moms if this unfair treatment is pointed out long and loud every time it occurs.

I do not support Bachmann but her "Wayne" misspeak is a black cat firecracker... or maybe a snap cap... to obama’s “My muslim religion” H-Bomb... or dozens of other Freudian slips!

While I do not support Bachmann, I do support Conservatism. Those of you that are True Conservatives know this in your heart. We can hold lively debates... we can promote our candidates with passion and truth... but at the end of the day... we are not enemies... we have real enemies... even here on Free Republic... I was attacked by one using FReepmail several times this morning. Thank you Jim and the Mods for banning that demonic drone!

Say what you mean... do it with passion, conviction and facts... but if you are conversing to another Conservative... try not to answer as you would if some DUmpsterdemon were the target.

I am respectfully asking that some of you at least consider my request... for that is all that it is.

Great list of real “gaffes”. The question the Washington Times article raises in my mind, is: Who is Bob Seigel and why is he trying so hard to destroy Michelle Bachmann?

And don't forget Sarah's other big gaff, where she supposedly got the year of independence wrong. When she said let's party like 1773.

Oh, what an idiot, she is so stupid, look at the drool running down her chin and the big “L” (thumb & index finger) on her forehead. She was supposed to say 1776, ha ha ha.

DUH, joke is on them. She was at a “TEAPARTY” event. She was referring to the “Boston Tea Party”. December 16, 1773.

And let's not forget:
“I can see Russia from my house!” (Tina Fey)

Palin actual quote was:

“They're our next-door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska.” (Sarah Palin)

“In case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten thousand people died — an entire town destroyed.” —on a Kansas tornado that killed 12 people

Reminds me of one of the SOUTH PARK episodes.

Reporter: Tens of millions of people have been killed, which is pretty amazing considering the population of the town is only 80,000. And we are reporting there is raping and looting going on.

NEWS HOST: You've actually seen raping and looting?

REPORTER: No. We're just reporting there is raping and looting going on.
