Defending Michele Bachmann (in a manner of speaking). Just how important are the gaffes?

Fans of the Duke immediately spotted the error, however, and called to point out that John Wayne was born 150 miles away in Winterset, Iowa. Serial killer John Wayne Gacy lived and worked in Waterloo.

This was NOT a "gaffe"!

John Wayne's parents first settled in Waterloo, and Bachmann's only error was that Wayne wasn't born there. She grew up there, so knew the town history, if imperfectly. Gacy has NOTHING to do with this story.
