I wasn't really planning to run away from home, but I was 5 and with a new baby sister felt like I wasn't getting much attention. So I filled my little suitcase with clothes, Pepsi and some food and headed off for the back of the garage attic. I at least wanted people to notice I was gone and think of me and not only my little sister! When I started to get really hungry, I opened my suitcase but had only packed Campbell's chicken noodle soup with no can opener! As I attempted to sneak back in, my mother stood at the door holding the can opener! She was paying attention! So I decided to move back in to my room.

I wish your father in law was my father!

My own personal experiences were quite different.
Usually, when a child runs away from home, there is a reason.

Good old rotary dial. Poor youngsters are saying, what’s that scratching noise?

Absolutely. Especially with the stories we have had in the news this past year. I am a retired grandmother, I get involved when I see a kid get a punch in the head. I just can’t stand to see abuse.

That horrid little thing grunting while climbing the bed.

It sounded like a rabid chihuahua being strangled.

Cable hadn’t caught on yet, and most people only had about 7 or 8 channels to choose from.

It's amazing, the changes. I remember eight-track players, Atari (pong), asteroids, vinyl records and a whole lot more.

You know you are getting older when your music is in the clearance bin.

I know that is true, and my heart aches for you. People never seem to realize just how important a father is to a child’s life. We are taught that God is our Father in heaven, yet so many times our own father does not present us with the idea of God that we should have. My own father was a strict disciplinarian and that is the way I used to see God. He was one who “punished” and I did not realize the love He has for His children. Thankfully, God himself, changed that understanding for me. Forgiveness is the only thing that sets us free from our childhood traumas.

LOL! I was WAY ahead of you on the preps - had my red wagon full of stuff, was going to go live in the woods a couple blocks away on the other side of the pond.

Realized I had forgotten a jar of peanut butter half-way around the pond. By the time I got home, mom was making waffles - my FAVORITE! (I suppose I was 6 or 7 at the time!)

Oh brother. That is all we need - intervention by do gooders that have no clue to the truth. Your suggestion has already been tried by government folks in Mass., Washington state and North Carolina. There were many instances of lies and blatant stories that were ridiculous and innocent lives ruined all in the name of protecting children.

WSJ won a Pulitzer in the 90s exposing these lies, but the damage was done.

Strangled a lot of rabid chihuahuas have you? Maybe you should try raising another breed.

**Children should be told by school teachers and counselor to report any kind of abuse.**

I oppose any type of child abuse, but I oppose even more having government workers indoctrinating children to inform on their parents and becoming involved in the lives of private citizens. Hitler’s era had kids informing on their parents and we certainly don’t need that here in the US.

Obvious signs of physical abuse of a child should be reported to PROPER authorities, but teachers should not be telling the kids to report abuse to them. If the teachers notice signs of abuse on a child, then THEY should notify the proper authorities to investigate, just as a Doctor would. Teachers don’t have the right to glean information from children about their parents or homelife situations.

Subheading should have read “Receives overdue butt-whipping.”

Britton said Josh was barefoot, filthy, had insect bites and ticks on him, but "overall for nine days, he looked pretty good."

Hope they have the kid tested for Lyme Disease...
