2 Republicans Open Door to Increases in Revenue

WASHINGTON — Two senior Republicans said Sunday that they might be open to raising new government revenue as part of a deal to resolve the dispute over the federal debt ceiling, but they warned that there was little time to enact a comprehensive deal.

One of the senators, John Cornyn of Texas, said he would consider eliminating some tax breaks and corporate subsidies in the context of changes in the tax code, provided there was not an overall increase in taxes.

“I think it’s clear that the Republicans are opposed to any tax hikes, particularly during a fragile economic recovery,” Mr. Cornyn said on “Fox News Sunday.” “Now, do we believe tax reform is necessary? I would say absolutely.”

But he insisted that any changes in taxes be “revenue neutral,” meaning that the government would not take in any more money from individuals or businesses than it does now.

Try at about 6:30 where Cornyn says a “mini-deal” may have to be made. While you may have a point about some knee jerk reactions that don’t verify NY Slimes or other flaming media, on this particular case you are wrong.

Cornyn’s kumbaya interview on Fox is equivalent to bringing a kubotan to a gunfight.

It’s not being hypocritical to criticize any GOPer in any state that folds his/her tent if the person also criticizes his/her own Sen/Rep. Where do you get off making such a stupid statement?

Question. If we balanced the budget next year....what would happen?

If we did it in a revenue-neutral way, it would mean cutting federal spending by about 10% of GDP. I do not see that happening, but it might have a few ripple effects if it did. These numbers from the Economic Report of the President are a bit dated, but the current ones are not very different.

I haven’t seen your posts previously, but I will respond to this one. Why are there no Dodo bird GOPers talking about this shenanigans? Do you have some sources or reference points to verify your account.

I will say this - nothing surprises me about what the Demcommies will do, but sourcing is important here.

Republicans should understand that ANY vote to enhance revenue (RINO’s and Liberals euphemism aka buzz words for raising taxes) will result in me voting for the “other guy”. I as a tuned-in and informed voter will not support anyone who does not fight for and vote to greatly reduce spending long before any tax increase is voted on. There is just way too much waste in our government spending to tolerate any more tax increases at any level of government.

It's a bit easier when one examines her relationship with John McCain and his positions on various subjects, IMO.

You can engage in all the name calling you like, but there is nothing Cornyn said in this instance that is objectionable to low-tax, small-government conservatives. A revenue neutral reform of business taxes could be a very good thing. Maybe not as good as eliminating the double-taxation of dividends, but still much better than nothing at all.

Please consider focusing your name calling on Democrats and other leftists.

I like what I've seen of Sarah Palin, and while I am emphatically NOT a fan of Sen. McCain, I don't blame her for supporting someone who supported her. Loyalty counts, and once given it needs to be honored. The simple fact of the matter is that if Palin had publicly opposed Sen. McCain in his re-election bid, or even if she had privately declined to support him, the word would have gotten out quickly in Republican circles that Palin was a disloyal backstabber who could not be trusted. We can blame Palin for "getting in bed" with McCain if we want, but if she had refused to become his VP nominee, most of us outside of Alaska never would have heard of her. Once she made that decision, her subsequent support for McCain is entirely appropriate.

I remain concerned about Palin’s lack of executive experience, but with a good team of future cabinet-level officials supporting her, that isn't an absolute bar to a successful presidential campaign. We've had several previous presidents who didn't have a lot of prior experience, and some of them have been quite effective.

If Palin is not the Republican nominee for the 2012 presidential election, I'd like to see her run for and win something that would put her in the national spotlight and give her both a platform to speak and experience to make a successful presidential run down the road. A senatorial seat in Arizona wasn't something I'd considered, but it might not be a bad idea.

The problem with that here is the folks who have been playing by the rules are stuck with paying for Congress’s mistakes. Any tax code changes should come in a separate piece of legislation.

I have posted the list of bills that are sitting in Senate committees, numerous times.

I came across them because I was following a bill that Patty Murray proposed in the Senate with Dick Durbin and Susan Collins to fund the rail/port Gateway Projects. Gateway projects, as you might know are part of the Agenda 21-Wildlands project.

Here is the list of bills pertaining to just infrastructure development that are sitting in Senate Committees. When you finish with the infrastructure development bills, try farming or some other area of concern. Infrastructure and development bills

The one hope is that the Republicans in the House can withstand the pressure at home to vote down the bills which specifically target their state.
