2 Republicans Open Door to Increases in Revenue

By JOHN M. BRODER

WASHINGTON — Two senior Republicans said Sunday that they might be open to raising new government revenue as part of a deal to resolve the dispute over the federal debt ceiling, but they warned that there was little time to enact a comprehensive deal.

One of the senators, John Cornyn of Texas, said he would consider eliminating some tax breaks and corporate subsidies in the context of changes in the tax code, provided there was not an overall increase in taxes.

“I think it’s clear that the Republicans are opposed to any tax hikes, particularly during a fragile economic recovery,” Mr. Cornyn said on “Fox News Sunday.” “Now, do we believe tax reform is necessary? I would say absolutely.”

But he insisted that any changes in taxes be “revenue neutral,” meaning that the government would not take in any more money from individuals or businesses than it does now.

As an objectivist, I see no problem with this if it the benefits outweigh the costs.

I’m with you. He’s not up for re-election until 2014 and has already started filling up his warchest.

McLame cannot help himself - he has a compulsion to reach across the aisle every chance he gets. As Reagan said "There you go again.......""

God I wish we had got rid of him in 2008, we tried but with his left over $20 million there was no way Hayworth could counter that especially after McLame had JD thrown off the radio even before he had made a running decision.

(Art.) One of the senators, John Cornyn of Texas, said he would consider eliminating some tax breaks and corporate subsidies in the context of changes in the tax code, provided there was not an overall increase in taxes.

In other news, Sen. Cornyn dropped trou, bent over, and put a sandwich board on his shoulders reading,

"Democrats -- please screw me hard!!

These bills amount to a third stimulus bill, but are broken down into individual grants and subsidies

Call it "Attack of the Stimulusbots" or "Attack of the TARP Clones" ...... same idea, just different strategy.

Thanks.

Cornyn Texas ping.

Thank you for posting this URL, and your reasonable point of view. It seems like many here on FR are reacting like the NYT knew they would.

That Palin dividend is really paying off.

How she could justify backing this POS over Hayworth is something I’ll go to my grave shaking my head over.

Why, it's natural to "reach across the aisle" after Obama graciously accepted McConnell's invitation 3 days ago, to talk about spending and taxes.... Oh, wait....

I agree Cornyn, eliminate the loopholes in exchange for reduction in overall rate to insure revenue neutral and a less complicated and corrupt Tax code is a good and needed thing.

He diden’t cave, he want it to be revenue neutral, so all hes advocating we get rid of is complication and corruption in the Federal tax code that makes company’s do things that don’t necessarily make economic sense just to get tax breaks.

Tax loopholes are bad for the overall economy, get rid of them but maintain the same revenue by reducing over all taxes.

Yes, when the Government reduces the cost of compliance, revenue increases because economic activity increases. This is a good thing.

Cornyn has backstabbed the GOP since working
for Romney. The two of them constitute the
BACKSTABBER WING OF THE GOP.

Predictably and on cue, Republicans start to give ground. When all this is said and done, the “deal” will be tax hikes for those earning $150K +, in exchange for a promise from the dems to consider the possibility of future budget-cutting “targets.”

Demand a full repeal of Obamacare in exchange for a $500B hike in the debt ceiling.

That`d be my base position. Nothing less than full repeal.

**McCain is a super liberal politician. He is only a conservative during an election year.
That’s not what Sarah Palin says. She believes McCain is a common sense conservative, because she has stated, numerous times, that is the only kind of candidate she will support.*

BS! She made ONE appearance on his behalf during his campaign for reelection in 2010. That was just a pay back she felt she owed him for the 2008 selection of her as his VP candidate. ....He wanted her to do more events with him during his reelection bid and she DID NOT do so. She had repaid him (although it probably caused some of that foul stuff to come up from her throat into her mouth).

Overreacting? Surely you jest. If the Republicans choose not to negotiate with the Democrats, we get $1.6 trillion in budget cuts. Do you really think they will get something better than a $1.6 trillion cut in federal spending (in a single year, btw) if they DO negotiate with Democrats?

Again, no compromise = $1.6 trillion in cuts. Compromise = Republicans looking like idiots again. Are you really willing to forfeit $1.6 trillion in spending cuts in exchange for a small tweaking of the tax code? Cornyn has lost sight of the big picture here, and it looks as though you have done the same.
