Fox News's hacked Twitter feed declares Obama dead
The Guardian ^ | 7/4/11

Rogue 4 July tweets on TV news channel's politics service go viral but Fox News is apparently back in control

Fox News has apparently fallen victim to hacking, with its politics Twitter feed repeatedly announcing President Barack Obama had been shot dead.

@foxnewspolitics began tweeting the information to its 33,000 followers at about 2am local time, with the posts rapidly being shared around the internet.

The rogue tweets appeared to begin after the account sent a message saying Fox had just "regained full access to our Twitter account".

The following tweets all related to the supposed death of Obama, with some posts being very specific about the president's injuries.

"@BarackObama has just passed. The President is dead. A sad 4th of July, indeed. President Barack Obama is dead," came the first tweet. The string of messages continued:

"@BarackObama has just passed. Nearly 45 minutes ago, he was shot twice in the lower pelvic area and in the neck; shooter unknown. Bled out", and then: "@BarackObama shot twice at a Ross' restaurant in Iowa while campaigning. RIP Obama, best regards to the Obama family."

Whatever the hoaxer's identity, they do not appear to have been entirely web-savvy. The first three posts revealing the president's death were directed to the @BarackObama Twitter feed, meaning only those following both accounts would have seen the messages.

I’ve never tweeted, and was just kind of forced into Facebook. Still haven’t seen much value to it, other than an easy way of maintaining a web page.

So, what is the deal with the @ and # signs all over those messages?

GREAT POINT. Proving once again that with the left, outrage is wholly selective.

Interestingly, the DU thread on this looks a lot like the FR thread. There are a couple of folk accusing Fox, but most of them are saying Fox's password was probably something stupid that script kiddies could guess and that the Secret Service probably asked them not to remove stuff from the Twitter site. There is similar speculation about riots resulting from this as well.

Not at all what I expected to see over there.

Dems in the 60s were a multi-focussed group. Many were hard left libs (in reality the fathers of the current Dem anti-American movement), while others were the Southern conservative, segregationist left-over Dixicrats.

LBJ was most interesting, a social lib, but pro-national defense.

One one requirement of all Dem politicians of that period, and their media sycophants, was that they expected all women to crave sex with them.

LBJ routinely did women in the oval office, (Missionary, not Monicas. Monicas were still “dirty” to older men back then.) Lady Bird knew about it, but it was "expected" back then.

Kennedy had a 17 year old who would be flown around to service him (Monicas, because of his back problems) in the presidential limo whenever he was out of town without Jackie. (Of course, Jackie was doing Onassis, William Holden and others while married to Jack.)

For Roosevelt, his secretary was the love of his life, and Eleanor has a "steady girlfriend." Eleanor even insisted the secretary sit next to her at the funeral, because in her words, "You brought him so much happiness, and Franklin would have wanted you right here." Dan Rather's specialty was Hertz girls at the local airports, especially down South during the civil rights days.

So, what is the deal with the @ and # signs all over those messages?

Twitter has a limit of 140 characters per message, so a lot of shorthand has to be used.

@ immediately followed a username is a "tweet" addressed to that specific user. For example @markomally XXXXX XX XXXXX = a tweet addressed specifically to user markomally.

@markomalley @gitmo XXXXX XXXXX XXXXX is a tweet addressed to both user markomalley and user gitmo

# is called a "hashtag" -- it is used to identify a common interest or a common group of users you want to see the "tweet"

For example, #tcot = "top conservatives on twitter" #teaparty = "Tea partiers on twitter" (Of course, that can be and is often abused by users who wish to spam those groups).

Where this is useful is you can use Twitter's searching function to pick out "tweets" rapidly (for example, I can look for all tweets addressed to me by searching on "@markomalley"; I can look for all tweets addressed to conservatives by searching on #tcot; I can look for tweets aimed toward catholics by searching on #catholic.

A couple of other things you would see are:

Note: there are a HUGE number of netroots libs on Twitter and that, in of itself, can be frustrating. But there are a number of conservatives on it as well.

I use it a lot to follow newsfeeds, reporters, and politicians. Generally, news outlets will tweet something the instant it is published. Likewise, reporters and politicians use it to get messages out in an unfiltered fashion.

It must be used with extreme caution, but as long as you aren't too naive, it is useful.

I think you under estimate the incompetency that is Joe Biden. I’d take BO before this clown.

Now that really surprises me...I never figured DUers to give FOX the benefit of the doubt on anything. To its credit, FOX has been discussing this story on their radio newscasts and not ignoring it.

You're very brave to enter the depths of DU. I went there once and haven't felt so grossed out since I was a kid and my class went on a field trip to the sewage treatment plant.

My twitter account was hacked two days ago. Someone sent out “earn money at home” style spam, as me, twice. I changed my password. I have no idea how they got it.

“I use it a lot to follow newsfeeds, reporters, and politicians.”

Be careful following politicians. You might end up seeing a Weiner.

LOL...I think Republican would still have been a slur even in the Sixties...so I don’t think they would have even been allowed to participate even had they held the same views...

When you put all that history into one post, you can only reach one conclusion: Liberals are depraved and deranged. No ifs, ands or buts about it.

My guess is this hacker works for Eric Holder because this type of false flag operation stinks just like Operation Gunwalker did....

True conservatives want the President to live a very long and very very healthy life as he watches the following. 1. The chance of a 2nd term slip away. 2. The removal of Obamacare via both Court and Congressional Action, 3. The reversal of the DADT decision, 4. the securing of the American border and prosecution for Gunwalker, 5. the ending of the permitorium for oil drilling in the Gulf and the drilling of ANWR. WE want to him to watch Americans stand up in droves to thoroughly undo the hopey changey agenda and we want him to replace Jimmuh on the epic fail list! May he live long and marinate in the reversal of his rampant statism!!
