The nation's largest teachers union voted Monday to support President Barack Obama's 2012 re-election bid, marking one of the earliest union endorsements for the administration.
About 72 percent of the National Education Association's representative assembly voted to recommend the president's candidacy to its 3.2 million members, despite past disagreements between the Obama administration and many rank-and-file teachers who dislike parts of the president's reform agenda.
An estimated 5,414 members cast their support for the president while 2,102 members said no during the summer convention held in Chicago.
The NEA becomes one of the first labor unions to formally support the president in 2012.
"We have the same shared vision of America. (The president) has always talked about the importance of education from preschool to the graduate level," said NEA President Dennis Van Roekel. " I don't mind fighting on how to get to that shared vision. I believe out of that discussion may come ideas that neither one of us thought about and may be better."
It is the earliest endorsement ever made by the union, according to Van Roekel. Indeed, the Republican field of candidates has not winnowed to a single candidate to oppose the president.

Here’s how irrational teachers unions are. In my state of Wisconsin, Gov. Walker’s plans prevented many teachers from getting the axe. The teachers despise Walker anyway. They want cadillac retirement plans and only very reluctantly agreed to alter them. They’re hoping when a Dem gets back into power, they’ll get their cadillac retirement plans back.
I’m a conservative teacher here in Illinois. So mad that my union money is being used this way!!!! I have tried everything, but I have no rights. I have no choice....in Illinois you have to join the union and they take the dues out of your check. 1,000$ a year. I called my state Illinois union, and complained....they sent me back 20.00$ that they said would be used on political campaigns.. Please.......and they told me they endorsed Republicans, too. I just started laughing.....

The NEA knows how to covet, and its members are the ones teaching our children. What surprise will we show when our children learn to covet?
Teaching used to be a profession, now it is big business. At least it could do a better job teaching children about business and free enterprise.
Come on, you don’t know how they did or didn’t vote. The patriot teachers I was referring to don’t whine about it. They continue to represent the Conservative point of view to their students and families. Three of our state TEA Party leaders are teachers. My point was don’t assume all teachers are libs or union lovers.
My comment was directed to those teachers who support this leftist union with their votes and their dues. They can do something about it if they choose to. They must have courage and fire in the belly to take that step. Freedom isn’t free and must be fought for.
