A police officer has been fired after allegedly losing his temper at a cook-off and throwing a tear gas grenade at a rival team - many of whom were military amputees.
Mike Hamby, 52, could face criminal charges for the drunken attack, which happened at this year's Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo BBQ Cook-Off in Texas.
Several members of the team were left vomiting and with burning eyes after Hamby, an officer with 30 years service, allegedly flung a military-style 'clear-out' grenade into their tent.
Hamby, who was off-duty, had been drinking before the incident in February, according to police documents.
He was competing on behalf of the Pitt and Spitts Barbecue team, who had fallen out with Hamby's Fayette County Cookers the night before. The next day Hamby became so enraged with his rivals, who included a number of wheelchair-bound military veterans, that he allegedly threw a canister of tear gas at them.

If he did that to me, it would depend on context, and whether it was under the color of law.
If it was personal? I'd take care of it, if required. If under the color of law? Hang him high.

It is the same story, what is your point?
lol.
Those veterans probably thought it was just something extra spicy for the cookoff.
This fool should be fired and jailed.

I did BBQ ribs for my neighbor and her grandkids today. So I went very easy on the fire compenent. My neighbor was disappointed that the ribs just weren't as 'peppy' as we've had before.
But the kid were able to eat them without 911 being called.

The guy is a Houston cop, just what do you think that you would be doing with him, and what about the almost 100 other people affected?
Seriously, tell us what you do with Houston cops that cross you.
Anyone else would have been charged with assault. You barely touch a cop these days and you get that charge.
“It is the same story, what is your point?”
No it’s not. More or less:
The UK story says he tear gassed the tent where the disabled vets were.
The other story says he was in the tent with the vets, heard people in the next tent over dissing the military, and tear gassed that tent.
No-one that is that much of a jerk, and a drunk, besides, can get very far without some 'correction' from either mother nature or some guy with a grudge.

It’s NOT a firing yet- “He was relieved of duty with pay, with the department saying he is accused of criminal wrongdoing.”
Because you get more information from worldwide sources rather than real local professional reporting, whatever that means, and not just the repeated every 15 minute traffic reports, sports scores and other pointless news.
All day, every day.
Go back to sleep.
“Those veterans probably thought it was just something extra spicy for the cookoff.”
Sounds like it was a mixture of habanero, serrano, cayenne, chili petines, and jalapenos. That’s mild stuff meant for the drugstore cowboys at the Houston Rodeo cookoff tents. Perhaps instead of getting beered up, they could have used the beer for a decent mop.
Not a good ad for the company kept by Pitts&Spitts. But frankly, the best BBQ in the state is nowhere near Houston; try Central Texas and the Hill Country if you want REAL Texas BBQ.
I guess namby pamby Hamby’s goat and sheep roping days are over, unless he has access to some cabrito or mutton.
Bet that POS never had one mental evaluation during his whole thirty years, what a freaking child.
“This incident occurred in March. Rather than listen to reporting from tabloids across the pond, why not get information that is much more detailed from here in the States?”
Perhaps you should check the dates of your story and the UK Mail story and determine which one is more current. Namby Pamby was probably p!$$ED because their opponents called his BBQ only good enough for chopped beef sandwiches. His ego as a Union goon and semi semi bigwig in the calf scramble (probably thought he was a would be Larry Mahan) took over and he decided he was gonna show them a thing or two. There are a lot of dim bulbs @ HPD.
Frankly, I could not care any less what Hamby says he heard. He is a cruel man. Even if every person said offensive things, he went to the even with the can in his pocket, fully prepared to injure as many people as possible.
I meant that he still gassed people in a tent, the crime, the assault, didn’t change.
You want to hear people in a tent bad-mouthing the military, sit in on a Hearts game with a bunch of E2-E4s.
The other story doesn't change my mind. Let the vets make the call on whether to prosecute or not.

Rated "/s" for the irony impaired
Pathetic defense, man.
Sounds good in theory Johnny, but unfortunately his pistol might have accidentally discharged in the course of his drunken fall. I wouldn’t put much past a guy who’d gas a bunch of guys in wheelchairs.
Well it isn’t Barney Fife so it must be Bufford T Justice
