Many people here are highly emotional over the verdict because a little girl died horribly and it only seems right that someone ought to pay for it. This is perhaps especially true because our culture, over time, has lost much of its decent respect for the value of human life. And also, the accused mother is hardly a sympathetic figure - and that is putting it mildly.

But a jury lives in its own world, divorced from the screaming media circus and focused instead on the relevant information presented to it, and the special context in which evidence is provided. Then they must make a decision based on a set of rules that serve to constrain them not only from the emotionalism of others, but from their own desires, too.

It doesn't always work. I don't know that it worked in this case. But I'd far rather have our system than that which pertains in much of the rest of the world.

Prayers for Caylee. One day, may the truth be fully known and may justice be done. God has a way of taking care of such matters, in His own time.
