The headline of this post really shouldn’t be controversial. It chimes perfectly with what Kevin “null hypothesis” Trenberth wrote in that notorious 2009 Climategate email to Michael Mann:

The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t.

And it’s what Phil Jones admitted in a BBC interview when he said that there had been no “statistically significant” warming since 1995.

Why then am I mentioning it now? W-e-l-l, because just as ze war is to the Germans, Chappaquiddick is to the Kennedy family and that Portland masseuse incident to Al Gore, so the recent lack of warming is to the, er, Warmists. They hate it. It’s an affront to everything they believe in. Damn it, if the world isn’t warming with the alacrity they’d prefer, how are they going to keep the funding gravy train going, and how are they going to persuade an increasingly sceptical populace that the “science” is “settled”, the debate over and the time for action is now? That’s why they can’t reminded of the truth often enough. It’s like salting the slugs that are ruining your garden: necessary, but also kind of fun too.

Well there were also sailors (as in ships with actual sails). Sailors, who's lives depend on the weather, are fanatical about recording every change in temperature, precipitation and barometric pressure. So the Royal Navy has very good records, from ships logs, of the climate from the 1600s to the end of the RN's dominance of the sea. And due to that dominance prior to 1940 anyplace you could float a boat the Royal Navy was likely to be found. On the other hand the climate in the southern hemisphere and inland areas are virtually unknown.

We need to do what we can to make sure this story gets coverage. Since the climate is constantly changing, the odds are at some point it will go up again. At that point, the Warmists are going to go ape, and the media and big government will back them up. This nonsense needs to be completely discredited before then.

O yea, the royal navy was all over the place.

Of course the down side is that the RN recorded information that was immediately useful to them. They were not interested in pure science, just keeping the fleet off the rocks and getting them to port before they ran out of food and water.

For example they accurately recorded the number of icebergs in the north Atlantic sea lanes. But do increased numbers of icebergs mean that more ice was being formed by cold weather, or that the ice was breaking up due to warm weather? And it is in interpreting that data where a warmer with and agenda can cause a lot of problems.

Also where the best ports are located, and hence the most data, aren't always the best place to calculate average climate. Anyone who has visited San Francisco knows that it is a lot colder and wetter than the rest of California. So when you compare temperatures from 150 years ago to now you are comparing cold wet San Francisco to hot dry LA. Not too surprising that you would see warming. Or for our gulf coast Freepers Galveston to Dallas.
