I have never read the text of hate crime legislation.
I do wonder HOW such laws can be constitutional however in light of how subjectively and capriciously they are applied.

The official cop position is there was no black mob at all and only two unrelated armed robberies occurred.
I live a couple of towns over from Plainfield, New Jersey.
Fifty years ago, Plainfield was a nice town, with prosperous businesses and a happy population. Then they had a few riots in the 1960s, and the town has never recovered. In one day, they pissed away a hundred years of progress.
Now, fifty years later, Plainfield is still a hole. All around, towns are doing well. But people still remember the riots, and Plainfield will never recover.

I know exactly what you mean. I'm originally from Michigan but haven't been back there since 1972 when I left to go to the Naval Academy.
This year, the National Square Dance Convention was held in Detroit ... DETROIT!!! I haven't been back to Michigan for almost 40 years and I still knew enough NOT to go to Detroit for any reason whatsoever. I remember what it was like back in the 60's and 70's .. and that was probably 1000% safer than it is now .. and that was still enough to not only keep me from attending but voicing my opinion to every other square dancer that I came into contact with.
