'She is a good mother... we were right' Juror defends shock acquittal of Casey Anthony
Daily Mail ^ | July 6, 2011 | John Stevens

An alternate juror in the Casey Anthony trials has said that he believes that Anthony was a good mother and that two-year-old Caylee’s death was just a horrific accident.

The sensational acquittal of Casey Anthony sparked outrage across the U.S. as angry spectators compared the trial’s outcome to the infamous verdict in the OJ Simpson case.

But Russell Huekler, one of five alternate jurors who were present for all the testimony and were sequestered with the 12 other jurors, said he would have given the same verdict and is stunned by the public anger.

I had visions of her chroming the sweet little girl so she could go out and party all night. After the child had “disappeared”I would have been a basket case, not out dancing dancing the night away! Another thought just occurred to me....maybe she over did it with the chloroform accidentally, taped her nose and mouth shut to hide the odor after she found her dead. I hate to think of that poor child suffocating!

"No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation. "

I don't know where you've been but the jury rendered a verdict. She can't be tried for the same crime again. Law School 101. Perhaps you would like to point out the statute that allows a "Not Guilty" person to be tried again.

"This verdict is an outrage, the members of this jury are too stupid to breath without instruction."

My take is that the jury was not given evidence that they could connect to the mother. No connection equals Not Guilty!

Well, they gave the jury enough dots to connect, but the jury was too dumb or lazy to do the connecting. I wish everyone could listen to Larry Elder on this. Convictions are made on circumstantial evidence all the time.

You bet there are, I have seen Jury's picked and they certainly are not a JURY of my peers.

The Really smart ones, know how to get out of JURY duty, all that leaves are the Dredges.

Or, is it just the state of Florida, where all the really stupid people live? We know they don't know how to vote and now this, they did not want to listen to the States circumstantial evidence that all went to Casey as the murderer.

They just wanted to go home.

They did not deliberate on anything, simply too a Poll. They were only out for not even 24 hours. How did they have time between Lunch, Dinner, 4th of July entertainment and going to bed. What 2 hours max of talking, MAYBE.

Not to Washington, please. We don’t want any more criminal rejects from other states.

I have the idea that there is considerable ill will against Casey and that some one might get stupid.

“After the child disappeared, I would have been a basket case..”

When my youngest was about four, she took her sister’s ipod and buds (which she wasn’t suppose to do) and crawled under her bed to listen to music. I folded some towels, stirred the spaghetti sauce and called her. Nothing. I called her again. Nothing. I screamed her name. Nothing. Until I found her, it must have been five minutes at the most. The five, longest minutes in my life. The terror, the panic! I was running around the house like a chicken with its head cut off. How any “mother” could party on, get a tattoo, and ignore the fact her daughter is missing 31 days is beyond me. After five minutes, I was sick to my stomach and shaking like a leaf. If Casey Anthony is a good mother, then someone put me up for sainthood (/s).

If there are no criteria at all for how a “good mother” is defined, then sure, Casey Anthony can be called a “good mother”. Anyone on the planet could be. Susan Smith. That woman who drowned all 5 of her children. All the single moms shacking up with their abusive boyfriends who let their boyfriends abuse and even murder their children. Yes, Casey Anthony is a good mom.

I wonder if this brainless moron is typical of the other jury members?

Evidently, only a moron could have acquitted her of the murder and manslaughter charges and then not convict her of aggravated child abuse for not reporting her missing for over a month while partying hearty. Of course one must take into account the myth that she was abused and discount the argument that wrapping your kid in Glad bags and duct tape and feeding her to the varmints is not abusive.

I think a lot of Freepers are confusing “reasonable doubt” with “beyond the shadow of a doubt”. If cases were 100% proven, jury verdicts would all be forgone conclusions. But they are not; which is why juries deliberate. Unless, of course, you’re the Casey jury.

“you could just see the love she had for the child in her eyes.”

He failed to learn the lesson in life of watching what people do, not what they say or how they look.

>>As frustrating as the verdict was in the Casey Anthony trial, I don’t think I want to change the system.<<

Nor do I.

But that said, this is not a “Victory for Justice” if a murderer indeed went free. It is an unfortunate reality that under our good but imperfect system, sometimes guilty people will go unpunished.

This is NOT a cause for celebration, high fives, or grandstanding, as I see some doing. If a guilty person went free, the system did NOT work.

It broke down. Justice denied.

But it is an unfortunate evil that must be endured, since we don’t have a better alternative system. We certainly have the right to speak out about it.

And I disagree with you on one other point...I do NOT see how the jury voted to acquit. I think it was a travesty. My opinion.

” . . . [W]hat will stop me from killing you and you from killing me?”

An ethical truth clearly beyond the ken of these twelve good men and true. But only one of many truths Mother T revealed about abortion. Yesterday at 2:15 p.m., I was in the doctor’s examining room, spared the live coverage of the verdict announced on the office lobby’s two huge-screen TVs. As I came out, one of the receptionists, a lovely, older black woman was saying, “If she didn’t want that beautiful child, why didn’t she give her to me?” Of course I thought of Mother Teresa. And then of the utter deterioration of society.

To all Freepers out there expressing their opinions about the Anthony case:
You are entitled to your opinion, just don't expect it to carry much weight because it is not a fully informed opinion.

I have heard a lot of Freepers comment on this case, but I have yet to hear ANYONE make that ridiculous claim!

I would remind you she was not on trial for being a "poor mother" but rather for a charge of capital murder. For a case like this a jury is empaneled and charged with evaluating the validity of the charge by scrutinizing evidence presented by both the State and defense. If the jury is not convinced after seeing such facts as presented you may conclude that the State's case was weak or the defense was overwhelmingly convincing. (I didn't think all that much of the defense's arguments...)

The sensational acquittal of Casey Anthony sparked outrage across the U.S. as angry spectators compared the trial’s outcome to the infamous verdict in the OJ Simpson case.

I doubt this case was anything like the O.J. (mis)trial because that debacle was caused by racial animus from "AA" jury members.

The good news is that "spectators" do not get a say in a trial outcomes based on opinions formed after reading sensationalized newspaper accounts. The Constitution grants you a trial by a jury of your peers. It grants the prosecution one bite at the apple while you can generate a string of appeals all the way to the Supreme Court. It also requires the State to PROVE your guilt beyond reasonable doubt. You, however, are not required to prove your innocence. This is a far more fair system then one based on the "Napoleonic Code" (most European legal systems) under which the accused stand guilty and the burden of proof of innocence is laid upon them. Our system of jurisprudence is based upon English Common Law, one of the greatest achievements of the human mind.

Do I think her guilty? Maybe, she was in proximity to the victim. But the state did not present ANY physical evidence linking her to the crime. No fingerprints, no matching plastic bags , no partially used roll of duct tape, they did not even present a circumstantial case. Their case appeared to me to be based on elimination of possible suspects. If it wasn't father, mother, baby sitter, &c, &c, it HAD to be Casey because there was no one else left. That ignores the 330,000,000 inhabitants that weren't looked at. You can not prove a negative premise and that IMHO appears what the DA tried to get past the jury.

Regards,
GtG

These jurors are idiots. They don’t have a lick of common sense. You could pee on their shoes, tell them it’s raining, and they’d buy it.

A good mother calls 911 when her daughter is taken / dies in a pool / anything bad happens. Period.
