Nancy Pelosi’s back at the negotiating table on debt ceiling

By: Jonathan Allen July 8, 2011 04:22 PM EDT

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is back at the bargaining table — but it’s not yet clear whether she’s willing to make a deal.

Burned by President Barack Obama’s decision to keep her out of negotiations on last year’s tax deal and this spring’s budget bill, sources close to the California Democrat say she is torn between playing deal-maker on a debt limit increase and fully protecting the priorities of Democrats’ liberal base.

On Thursday, in advance of a Friday meeting with the president at the White House, Pelosi lit into Obama’s budget director, Jack Lew, in what is becoming a habit of sending sharp messages through his top aides. Pelosi sought to impress on Lew — and no doubt his bosses at the White House — that House Democrats expect to be consulted more now than on past deals and that the president can’t expect to win passage of a debt limit package without support from House Democrats.

“Don’t insult us,” she said as Lew tried to explain why House Democrats were cut out of the budget bill discussion earlier this year, according to one source who was in the room. “You guys don’t know how to count.” It was a replay of a similar jab Pelosi took at White House economic adviser Gene Sperling during a similar meeting before the budget bill deal was reached.

But while House Democrats’ nerves remain raw, they’re in a much better position now to flex their muscles. And Pelosi, once treated as irrelevant by Obama and Republican leaders in Congress, might just have the necessary clout to put a debt limit deal over the finish line.

As with everyone else in the nation, even Dick Obama wants to rid himself of Jezebel. That's saying something.

The only people that want her around are Frisco homos, hippies and union goons.

She needs to ride in the back of the Bus.

Dick Obama is actually trying to throw her under the bus, as he does with all his former friends.

I suppose that's a better fate than the real Jezebel, who got thrown out a window - her corpse left to be eaten by dogs.

There's something to be said for the way they did things in the Old Testament.

What a stupid article. Pelosi is as irrelevant as Newt Gingrich in these negotiations.

In San Fran Nan's case it can't be PMS or Hot flashes. Wonder why she's in there? Could be she is trying to protect her husbands existing tax breaks or maybe just looking for a copy of the Health care bill so she can find out whats in it.

If Slow Joe Biden is there, then Nancy should be there also ... you shouldn’t break up matching pairs ... of idiots. Sit them next to each other and they both can say “I here with stupid!”

Pelosi had a huge hand in the big deficit, but ramming bills through Congress and spending money like a drunken sailor.

GOP’s opening offer is that the debt ceiling should be lowered to ZERO

It should be their opening offer, since the Democrats' opening offer is essentially to do away with a debt ceiling and pass another so-called 'stimulus' bill. Republicans shoot themselves in the foot every time by coming out early and saying what they are willing to give up in order to appear bi-partisan. It always goes downhill from there.

Actually, I hope the universally beloved Pelosi is HIGHLY visible during these negotiations.

I almost feel sorry for Obama and his tormenting harpy.

“In San Fran Nan’s case it can’t be PMS or Hot flashes...”

I would guess that just about all she can muster at this point is small piles of dust left wherever she had been seated.

Nobody cares to remember him, but the MSM might trot him out to endorse "compromise" any time now

They NEED Pelosi since the GOP leadership is going to ABANDON the Tea Party caucus.

The deal that will be cut will cut the Tea Party wing of the GOP O. U. T.

Both sides have decided to put us in our place.

We'll have to punish the GOP fist, then eliminate the dims as a political force.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is naive at best.

I have to agree that the Establishment GOP has their panties wadded up over the Tea Party. And attempt to marginalize them at every turn. But I truly believe some waves are being made.

The TEA party isn't going to go away. That is what neither side understands.

I post the following for humor only. Maybe the TP Caucus could craft demands for the debt ceiling/budget/ and balanced budget amendment. We could solicit SanFranNan to be a “hired gun” to ram thru the demands. (no doubt she is a political ho). As much as I despise her, she has far more...male parts than Boner and McConnell. AND...it would have the added benefit of giving Barry severe heartburn. She could then be kicked to the curb and her constituency would hate her.

It gives me a chuckle even though it isn't the real world.

I’m sorry, I don’t understand why Boehner—or an House conservative—is negotiating with the Marxist Pelosi. Boehner ought to produce a budget that: 1. Materially reduces government spending. 2. Kills government policies that punishes individual and business success. 3. Kill ineffective/failed and that have not achieved their purpose. 4. Kill fraudulent gov’t programs/policies. These include anything to do with climate change (aka global warming)—like ethanol, so-called alternative energy subsidies and Onadacare. 5. Stakes out a clear plan for forcing the Fed Gov’t to operate on a balanced budget. Obviously this includes eliminating the current and growing deficit.

I suspect it can be passed in the House if Boehner has the courage to just do it. Force the Senate to vote it down or pass it. If it votes it down then let the Senators who voted for it answer to the voters. If the Senate ultimately passes it then let the Usurping Marxist Onada veto it—and answer to the voters. If he signs it he will lose his screwy Marxist base. It’ll find another commie to run in his place. Either way conservatism wins because Onada is gone.

Any thinking non-ideological person living outside the Beltway can see that we are not in a compromise situation. The government is fiscally broke and its policies are broke. There needs to be a radical new beginning—a reset— that gets us back to Constitutional baselines. We’re way past the time a nibble here or there will fix anything—even in the short term.

I challenge Mr. Boehner to a least try to emulate The Founding Father’s and think big for a change. This is not about politics any longer. It is about the survival of the American way of life.

Marxists want to dismantle every thing that made our country the greatest social and economic engine the world has ever known. What do they want to replace it with? An ideology, Marxism, that has failed miserably every where it’s been tried.

The Marxist elite believe it is unfair for some person or group to have more than another person or group. Ambition, brains and the willingness to take risk mean nothing to them. If this utopia cannot be achieved then they believe it is their job to be in charge of the shared misery—the Marxist elite excepted.
